On my 96 gix 750 there was a recall in 98 for a new fuel pump gasket. This has never been changed and I wanted to check/replace the fuel filter. Should I take it to the dealer for the recall or is it safe enough to just get a new gasket and do all the work myself?

You can do it if you want... Run as much gas out as you can (or drain it) and then take the tank off. Turn it upside down so the gasket is up, un bolt it, put the new one on and bolt it back up...

I thougtht the dealers eyes were turning brown with crap when he made it sound like it was vital that they change it out. I will also drain, clean, and seal the tank so when I do the fule filter it won't get any crap or rust particle around it. Thanks john. Aslo it is a pain to get the gas tank off isn't it. The brackets stay under neath the tail section right?

lift the tank up, then undo the 2 bolts that fix the "hinges" to the frame, pull the sides of the the tail peice apart and it'll come off (after you've diconnected all pipes/wires etc images/icons/wink.gif ), it's real easy.
BTW, do not overtighten the bolts when refitting the fuel pump assembly or it'll piss fuel forever more!

The reason the dealer wants to do it, is cause it was a safety recall. and if you do it and the bike lights on fire... then you can sue suzuki cause of the "defect" in the bike...

I JUST CHANGED THE GASKET ON MY 98 GSXR 600 AND IT IS NOT BIG DEAL. THE NEW GASKET WILL COST YOU AROUND 22.00 DOLLARS AND COMES WITH NEW BOLTS. PRETTY SIMPLE. IF YOU HAVE A SERVICE MANUAL IT WILL GIVE TORQUE SPECS AND TIGHTNING ORDER OF THE BOLTS
