: Choke Lever woes
superiorWANG 03-23-2002, 10:36 PM Hi everyone,
Strangest thing happend today. I went to start my bike, choke on -> ingition-> starts fine. however, after a few seconds I release the choke to warm it up with the throttle, only thing is that it did release! I mean, the lever moved, but the engine was still behaving like the choke was on. WTF? I thought. so I lifted the tank and took a look. started to move the lever, and say that there is a little pin that moves in and out of the engine on the left side when I move the lever (I guess this is how a choke works). From the fact that the pin was moving, I concluded that the lever was working. So I started her up again, and it worked. HOWEVER, without the choke, the bike would die without throttle (it was working fine YESTERDAY). I raised the idle a bit, and that seemed to fix that.
So that leaves me with two uncertainties:
1) How do I know if my choke is working properly? I'm kind of afraid that the choke actually isn't releasing COMPLETELY...I don't want to be riding around on partial choke.
2) Well...now my idle may be off. It looks ok on the tach (the one on the bike) though. Anyone know how accurate the tach on the bike's guage cluster is?
Thanks!

Hammer 4 03-23-2002, 10:44 PM Can't help ya with regards to the choke, but to adjust the idle, there's a black knob..by the coolant resivor..the top of the knob should be facing you as you sit on the bike..turn it clockwise to up the idle.. images/icons/grin.gif

I knew how to adjust the idle (see original post), my concern with the idle is that I'm not sure how acurate the tachometer on tbe bike is...so if it looks like it's 1200 rpm on the tach )which is what I think it's supposed to be - is it ACTUALLY 1200 rpm?
HouseDJ 03-23-2002, 11:19 PM ocasionally on my bike i will choke it, move the choke lever and it doesnt 'un-choke'....but the lever moves fine....but if i pull the lever back to choke and then off again that usually clears it up...wierd...i know you said you verified that the choke was moving on the carbs....just thought i'd share since they sound similar

ironhead 03-24-2002, 09:34 AM I think you should trace your cable to the back of the carbs. You said a pin moves in and out of the engine but that doesnt seem right to me there is a bronze slite plate on the back of the carbs that the cable attaches too. When you put the choke in it slides the plate to the Left and when you disengage the choke it should slide it to the right (if im remembering correctly). The slide attaches to the choke on each carb and works them simultaneously. It is very possible you broke your cable but it should be alot easier to work the choke lever.
reidisaki 03-24-2002, 05:14 PM K someone verify this for me. For a 98 gixxer 600 the idle should be at 1300 rpms? right? I think i am right but hey I no shit cuz i am a moron! so please someone pm me if it is 1300 or 1200..
Hammer you're PM's are always so FUNNY and misspelled. REID!

Yur wite..I neber di spll to godt.. images/icons/grin.gif
-speadfreak 03-26-2002, 12:54 PM Dude, Take the carbs off and check the bronze slider that connects to all four carbs. Mine came off two carbs and was partial choked all the time. I thought my bike was the biggest piece of shit after I bought it, But when I fixed the slider problem it ran better for me than the previous owner.

waxling 05-27-2002, 07:51 AM Hi guys,
I thought I'd resurrect this post as the temp has dropped here (to under 25C images/icons/smile.gif ) and I actually have to use the choke images/icons/frown.gif
Initially my bike didn't have this problem, it seemed to "unchoke" ok, but recently it started to not retract. Pulled the tank to have a look at what was going on and sure enough the closest choke pin was not retracting fully, manually pusing it back in seems to work, and eventually it stopped retracting enough to drop the idle. So I started to use the throttle to start. After flooding it a few times images/icons/smile.gif I began to use the choke again but I'm pretty sure it will happen again.
How do the choke pins normally retract? spring loaded? pushed (not pulled) by the cable? I only say this as it does not seem to be a problem with the cable crappin out, unless choke cables get shorter when they fail??? (mine is now wound right in and still does not disengage the choke properly, any tension makes it worse).
Thanks
96Gixx7Fitty 05-27-2002, 01:06 PM I think you should choke the chicken! hehehe *kidding* I agree. I would say the same for the bronze plate. It's a culprit that happens from time to time.
Hammer.. you should ride a track day with tha' Hammer Pants. lol It's ok no one has to laugh at my dumb-@ss jokes.. hehehe images/icons/shocked.gif graemlins/piss.gif
nowkeg 05-27-2002, 09:40 PM my choke cable was getting sticky so i took it off and lubed it, it worked better for a while then it got sticky again, but unlike someone who posted b/f all my chokes work evenly so i get a pretty smooth bad running. anyhows, my thoughts on idle speed... if it thumps, it is too low, it's gotta be smooth, but as low and still smooth as possible. for me after it's warmed up is pretty low like 11-1200. it's still smooth so i'm happy. if it's a bit high, maybe you'll burn a lil more extra fuel, and have less compression braking, for those of us who use it.
NotoriousREV 05-28-2002, 03:54 AM This happened to my mate Quinny with his 99 600 just last week. It's the cable, just take it off and lube it, or if it still don't work, replace the cable.
To confirm this, just take the cable off at the carb end and move the pin and release it, it's spring loaded and should return to the off position, if it doesn't then it's more serious.
Idle should be 1200rpm, but I set mine higher (1500) to get smoother drive out of corners, but only 'cos the carbs need jetting and balacing images/icons/wink.gif
