: car problems...added too much oil...please help :(
mferg-tsr 04-10-2011, 07:31 PM Hey guys just wanted to run this by the forum since i know there are some knowledgeable people here. So my roommate hasnt owned a car in quiet some time and made the horrible mistake of adding too much oil to this 97 honda civic he just got. I doubt the thing needed that much more oil but he went and put a whole 2 qts in it :hammer
So of course he put too much oil...right now whats happening is that its smoking like crazy when he drives it (smoke only out of the exhaust). Also it is or at least was dripping oil from the exhaust too. So we drove it around a little and i mean it does drive fine and sounds good and all except for those 2 things. He has already done a new oil change/filter so of course hes not still running with too much oil. He has also been idling it in our driveway for like an hour at a time in hopes it somehow burns it off??? i dunno...But since i really have no idea about cars wanted to see like maybe if someone had some suggestions as to what he should do. Some people are telling him its fucked while others are saying it will go away....i guess what we are hoping is a majority of people say "it will be ok" lol
Either way...thoughts, opinions, help? anything would be appreciated
thanks guys! :cheers
Moto_Joe 04-10-2011, 07:40 PM It likely pumped oil out of the crank case breather. I am not sure if that goes to the airbox on a car or not, but that is what would happen on a bike, and a civic motor really is not all THAT much different from a bike motor
mferg-tsr 04-10-2011, 08:12 PM ahh okay, but i mean is that something that needs to be fixed? logically of course i would assume so, but he still figures to try and keep driving it and hope for the best.
Moto_Joe 04-10-2011, 08:17 PM Open the air box and see. If there is a shit ton of oil in there, clean it out :idea
mferg-tsr 04-10-2011, 09:14 PM lol ok cool...so he says he has already checked the air filter and it was clean...but you think there is an air box on a car like there is a bike? seems to make sense to me
why wouldnt you drain the excess amount?
there is an airbox from factory.
Darkshadow62988 04-11-2011, 05:38 PM The air filter is in the airbox :banghead

Well of course this was the first thing he did like i stated, was do a full oil change and filter change with the proper amount of oil lol.

Ok cool...i knew it was a dumb question but still something i had to ask since i didnt know for sure :( like i said i dont know much about cars
Youngandrestless 04-11-2011, 08:02 PM Just drain out a little at a time. Until it's good. No need to drain it all out with a new filter. You sure this "buddy" isn't you :) Just kidding

the draining and refilling of new oil has already been done and problem persists. :hammer
And not me i am a bike man...i have no car lol. Also i am not 16! well neither is my roommate but it was a 16 year old first-car-owner thing to do lol
so he put too much oil in TWICE?
goto a garage, and get it done properly, or give it to me.
mferg-tsr 04-12-2011, 12:20 PM :facepalm
no man, it was overfilled once, then he changed the oil completely and put it at the proper level. Hes been driving it still and its smokes on and off now. So i dunno...
redneckrider 04-13-2011, 02:09 PM Funny story, slightly similar.
Right after I got my Maxima I did an oil change. Got underneath, drained the oil out, thought to myself, my that oil is a funny color, but said WTF and finished the job. New filter, put in the correctamount of oil, checked the level but it showed like WAAYY overfull. I figured it was just from the oil still draining down and I had to go out so my gf and I hopped in and took off. After about 100 feet from the driveway the car just revved up and stopped moving!! :wtf I knew immediately what happened.
I backed it up into the driveway and fconfirmed that I had drained the transmission fluid instead of the oil :banghead Laughed about it, drained the oil out, refilled with fresh oil, refilled with tranny fluid, and all was again right with the world.
Stupid Nissan engineers putting the tranny fluid drain plug 4"s from the oil drain plug, and making them look the same and the same size. :lol
Anyway, your (buddies) car is still smoking because some oil was blown out of the PCV system and is now making its way through the engine and out the exhaust. It should clear up after a bit.
