: my "other vehicle'' has a problem
RI RIDER 03-07-2011, 03:18 PM Hey guys besides my bike i drive a 96 accord w/ about 140k on her. the other day i had left the tank till almost past empty. I come out of fast food place and the car starts to studder, and vibrate like about to run out of gas. i make it to gas station acroos the road and fill it half way. i start to drive home an it does the same thing , this time the engine light came on. i took it to autozone for test and came back '' cylinder 1 misfiring" i got spark, half tank of gas plus injection cleaner, I AM SO BROKE THIS WEEK . I got a guy whos gonna check her out tomorrow at 6PM. hes a honda tech. and has mad parts and tools and a 2 bay garage and lifts. hope nothing major. what u guys think/ fuel filter, pump, injector in cylinder 1 gone? plugs i took out and cleaned they were put in last march
Lean With It 03-07-2011, 03:22 PM letting it run low like that runs the chance of getting some gunk suck up and ran through the system. :dunno
it can also damage the fuel pump...they are supposed to suck fuel...not air.
can running low on gas to the point of stuttering and jerky cause a timing jump issue or spark plug damage? :dunno I know I ran real low on gas once in my SE-R and the damn thing started runnin like it was on 3 cylinders...got home and pulled the plugs...black as hell and one plug had the tip of it welded to where the spark arcs. Pre-Detonation or something like that. Spark plug was ruined. Replaced it and it ran fine.
injection cleaner is best used when the tank is almost empty, pour in cleaner and then FILL UP tank.

well if it was the fuel pump would the car not run at all? i hope it is something dumb like the fuel filter. i got no extra cash for major repairs, guess its gonna be a long sleepless night for me . any other opinions guys?
Lean With It 03-07-2011, 03:33 PM my old ass bronco has a weak ass fuel pump lol...but it still runs...fires on all 6....just slow as balls.
davidhar 03-07-2011, 03:44 PM The fuel pump could bet shot enough to not run the engine, but able to supply enough fuel for 'most' of the engine - i.e. run like shit. And yes, the fuel filter could cause problems like this if running the tank down sent all the gunk to the filter. Replace plugs, check fuel pump, filter, go from there.

well hopefully i can get someone w/ honda knowledge to make my anxiety ease until i go see the mechanic tomorrow night.

dam hope it not the fuel pump! guess i wont know till tomorrow. thanks guys , i'll give updates tomorrow night. fingers crossed, i need my car.
Fiddy_Ryder 03-07-2011, 03:49 PM might be the ICM. iirc, its in the distributor. seen plenty fail on the mid 90's honda line.

is that a lot of loot to fix? valve cover gasket is leaking a bit . i do get plenty of spark in all 4 cylinders.
Fiddy_Ryder 03-07-2011, 03:56 PM if you have spark on all 4, its not the ICM. fuel pump would be next guess. you should be able to put a test gauge in line to see fuel pressure.

well like i said, i hope its the filter and not the pump , broke this week , as i said before:suicide
RI RIDER 03-07-2011, 04:15 PM I forgot to mention, the car is fine when i first start her up even w/ the engine light on, then a minute later it starts its shit again . .lol
jfm02silverado 03-07-2011, 07:43 PM It could be a faulty throttle position sensor but I would check the previously mentioned items first.
if it was running on empty, the air / fuel mix is incorrect and wont get ignite
LynnM 03-08-2011, 12:26 AM Maybe try cleaning the throdle body
RI RIDER 03-08-2011, 10:28 AM also will i be able to drive to the mechanics house, like 10 min . away back roads ?
dev1360 03-08-2011, 03:21 PM Bad plug wire, clogged filter from running low. Fuel pumps don't usually cause a single miss. A weak fuel pump can throw a lean code, engine low on power. Usually when they fail, the vehicle will fail to start. On a fuel injected engine, the ECU needs a minimum amount of fuel pressure before it will start and a weak or failing fuel pump normally cannot meet this required pressure.
