You're in urgent need of a service manual (http://wotid.com/gsxr/content/view/22/43/).
Welcome and congrats on bike choice.
Do you know anything about bike history ? Sounds like it has a TRE - if you start the bike and hold the clutch in does it idle better ?
Post up some pics and some more info on bike. with pipe, filter and PC i can get about 220klms from a tank when going easy. On track that's down to 120kms.
I've had a crap load of bikes including owning K1, K2, K3, K5 and I had a damn good go at the K8 1000's - I settled on the K3 as my main steed and long term keeper.

...how do you get to the air filter?...
Raise the tank (two bolts in the front come off), take off the big plastic cover underneath (screws all around the outside and one in the middle) reveals the filter.

I get about 40-46 miles per gallon on my k3 1000, I do a ton of freeway riding though but I also rip it open a lot so I think I could even get better millage than that if I tried.

Should probably remove the seat first right? :biggrin
K3 / K4's are fantastic for how easy routine maintenance is. I can put in a new air filter and four spark plugs in about 45 minutes. Good old CR9E's are cheap as dirt as well.
You can change your oil and filter without removing any bodywork. Watch the face of an R6 (and many other bikes for that matter) owner when you tell them that. Good times.
A couple of must do's for this bike.
-suspension is a little on the stiff side unless you are 250 lbs and travel in excess of 130mph on a regular basis.
-a "smart" TRE like one from Dano's performance. A whopping $28 and worth every penny.
-shitcan the exhaust valve servo and cable. Remove and tape off servo wire in the ECU harness.
-front brakes could use a little sprucing up.
other than that, good tough bikes.

I always put premium 91 octane in the bike...it specifically says on the bike not to use less than 90 octane. I have put 89 octane in one time and noticed it pings a bit though.
