: Program CD auto run??

I have a CD that has study materials on it. When I stick the cd in the cd rom drive, it will "auto run."

I wanted to run the program off my hard drive, so I copied the CD onto my harddrive. When I tried to run it from the harddrive by clicking the "auto run" in the program, it will say it needs the CD?

How can I make it run from my harddrive without putting the CD in the drive (it makes loud azz noise from the laptop http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bash.gif)?

TIA http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Try running the main executable file...not the autorun file.

I haven't messed with autorun stuff in a while. The autorun is probably written in plain ASCII text. It probably specifies the location of where to run the fiels. Just edit it so that it points to the files copied onto your hard drive.

There are no excutable files anywhere besides the "auto run."

When I try to run it from the hard drive, it shows this

These shows what are in the auto run files

Well, it actually looks like there's 2 executables, but I can't tell for sure cuz you're not showing full file names. You'll have to go up to tools, options, and one of the tabs in there has a checkbox that says something to the effect of "hide file extensions of known types" or something like that. Uncheck that, you want to see the entire file name.

Ahh...I take it that the program actually starts without the cd. But then when you get to that stoplight splash screen it prompts you to pop in the cd? It looks like the program may be hardcoded to run off of the cd, in which case you're SOL. You could try and edit the autorun file on your hard drive to point to the full path of the files you copied. Instead of it saying open=autorun.exe it would read open=c:\[path to files]\autorun.exe. Although, I'm thinking that isn't going to do anything for you.

what happens if you double click the 'index' file instead of autorun?

I'll try the above when I get home today. Thanks Beany http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

It does the same thing if you were to click on the other two autorun files, which will start the program and then asks for CD.

if nothing else works, you can create a cd image of the cd on your hard drive and mount it using virtual cd drive software. if you've got nero burning rom, you don't need anything else - create a nero image of the cd, then mount it with nero imagedrive.

or you can use daemon tools (it's virtual cd software), but you'll still need other software (like cdrwin) to actually create the image. http://www.daemon-tools.cc

if the cd is copy protected, the software you use to create the image will need to be able to deal with it. deamon tools has 'protection emulation' modes that may or may not work.

I'll give the above a shot too when i get home, but I don't know about the "mounting" part though http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif. I do have Nero6. Thanks.

I did copy the program CD onto a blank Cd and the copied Cd works the same as the original. So, I take it that it's not copy protected??

mounting in this context just means 'inserting' the cd image into the virtual cd drive. you should be pretty much all set if you've got nero 6. just enable imagedrive, create an image of the cd (open nero, select 'image recorder' as the recorder and do a disk copy), and mount the image into imagedrive.

I don't know exactly how this "mounting/image" thing works, but i managed to follow your directions and it worked http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gifThanks http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Question: So with this image drive thing.....Do I have to have Nero to run the program? Say I want to put the program (the copied image?) onto my laptop which does not have Nero, would it still work/run??

imagedrive is part of nero, so you'd need to have nero installed if you want to do the same thing on another computer.

the alternative i suggested before was daemon tools, but it doesn't support the nero image format, and has no provision for creating the images, so you'd need some other burning software installed that can create the images.
