: Low fuel light / fuel economy

How is everyone doing here on fuel economy with the new 600s? I'm getting about 40 mpg on mine.

Next question is about the low fuel light. The manual says it comes on with 1.8 qts left in the tank, so that should be close to 20 miles. But....and check my math here....I had the fuel light go on the other day, rode about 10 more miles, then stopped for gas. I only got 3.6 gallons in there though. Now it's supposed to be a 4.5 gallon tank, which means I should have put at least 4 gallons in there to fill it up. Where's my extra half gallon? Is it just that you can't fill the tank all the way to its 4.5 gallon capacity, or is there actually more gas in the tank when the low fuel light comes on than the manual says? I'm a little hesitant to test this out as I don't feel like walking to a gas station when I run out in the middle of some back road. And riding around with a gas can strapped to your passenger seat can't possibly be safe....

Is it that the rest is in the pipes/throttle boddies etc?

I have a Land Rover and when the light comes on I always find a similar thing, I think the fuel is what is in the pipes and fuel pump etc.

Its not 1.8 qts lol its 1.1 gallons thats why u were only able to put in 3.6 gallons in the tank http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif

I'm almost positive the manual says the light comes on with 1.8 qts left in the the tank, not 1.1 gal. Don't know where you got that number from.

So does anyone have a real idea how much mileage is left in the tank when the light goes on? That 3.5 gallon fill is right on par with my bike, so does that mean there's really a gallon left in the tank when the light goes on? Or is it impossible to get the full 4.5 gallons in there...love to know.

On the previous gen 600 (01-03) when the fuel light came on you could get another 50-60km (~35-40 miles). That's if you rode conservatively and weren't wringing the throttle out. The new gen bike shouldn't get drastically different fuel economy numbers (40-45mpg in mixed highway/city roads). Sometime for fun someone should ride really conservatively (below 5K rpm) and see how far the bike would go on a tank. I bet it could do 50mpg if driven really gently.
