: Horrible noise when starting and warming up.
rickcash26 10-25-2010, 02:09 PM I searched engine knock and ticking and found some possible answers but were mostly for older gixxers so I figured maybe someone can chime in with some advise from the newer era gixxer riders/owners. I start my bike at about 8:30 a.m. outside temps lately in the mid 60's maybe low 70's occasionally. After about 1 minute it starts making this horribly loud knocking sound from towards the front of the engine. I read about the infamous "gixxer tick" but this seems way to loud to just be a normal sound for the bike to make. After it warms up to about 150-160 degrees the tick/knock goes away and the bike sounds perfectly fine. I don't want to ignore it and later on have some catastrophic event happen of something.
Earlier in August the local Suzuki dealership had my bike for a month rebuilding the engine because my valves somehow got all fucked up (said it was from putting diesel in my tank but i ALWAYS use the highest grade I can get aside from racing fuel) Replaced all my valves and seals and I've put almost 1000 miles on the bike since then. Now the bikes made that noise in the past but never as loud as its been the last few days maybe as far as last week. I'll try to get a good video of it after I get off work and let it cool back down and start again to see if I can capture the sound if not I'll make the video tomorrow morning and post up. If anyone has any ideas or advice on this it's be much appreciated.

For a sound issue i would just say your best bet finding the issue is to leave the bike overnight at the shop and then go back in the am when it is cooled down so they can tell what sounds you are talking about. Pretty hard to diagnose a sound issue on the forums unfortunately :( also not that its THAT big of a deal as i put 91 octane gas in my tank from day one...but you can actually put reg 87 octane just fine as thats what the engine is rated for (in the user manual it says rated for 87). I fianlly made the switch to 87 after reading countless threads on the issue and have had no issues with it at all. Doubt thats what causing your engine problems tho :-p
Chavagnatze 10-25-2010, 04:38 PM Timing chain noise and valve tappet noise are not unusual. The timing chain noise is usually an issue with the chain tensioner. There are manual timing chain tensioners out there that don't have a wear issue like the stock one (hydraulic ratchet type)
These machines don't have all of the NVH reducing hardware and make a number of weird noises by nature. If the engine was rebuilt, I wouldn't worry about it.
4 Wheel Slide 10-25-2010, 08:40 PM just take it back to the dealer... they built the motor...

I get this same exact noise in the morning. Just started recently and I figured there was a bolt loose on the headers, but tightened EVERYTHING and still hear the noise. It may be just me but it seems like the noise is getting worse...
germ2jap 10-28-2010, 11:29 AM I'm guessing we need a manual cam chain tensioner? Not very familiar with them but couldn't you buy another OEM self adjusting one and it would last another 20,000 miles?
germ2jap 10-28-2010, 12:32 PM Any help would be much appreciated. I'm trying to find a write up on how to replace the CCT on an 08. Anyone???
rickcash26 10-28-2010, 02:00 PM I know i need to replace the CCT on mine. Its gotta be pretty worn and whats really causing such a loud ticking noise. If you find a writeup let me know Id be interested in doing it real soon and having a how to would make it tons easier.
squale147 10-28-2010, 04:11 PM the usual method is to install the APE unit, run the adjuster bolt in by hand until you feel some resistance, then tighten the locknut. Start the engine, run until at full operating temperature. At this point--engine running at idle--loosen the lock nut, slowly back off the adjuster until you just start to hear camchain noise(can't miss it--a slight "knock" as the cam(s) chatter back and forth with the loose chain. Then slowly screw in the adjuster until the noise just stops--and turn in 1/4 turn more. DONE
rraiderr 10-28-2010, 07:44 PM I do it the exact opposite.
Get the bike up to temp, turn it in till you hear the to tight sounds and loosen 1/4 of a turn.
germ2jap 10-28-2010, 07:48 PM I was under the impression you had to find Top Dead Center

Me too, fitting one soon:hammer

Hints on fitting it instead of just adjusting? :cheers
g34343greg 10-30-2010, 05:14 PM mine makes some pretty loud ticking when i first start it.
i've found the easiest solution is ear plugs.

Only ticks from about 90 degrees to up to about 150 or 160 and after that it goes completely away. As stated above the consensus is the CCT and getting a manual one instead of the stock one will correct the ticking noise. :chucks
elopez12@umd.edu 11-01-2010, 01:28 PM I'm pretty sure mine has been making some sort of similar noise too. Its not really temperature specific as far as i have noticed but it usually happens when the bike is warming up or warmed up on neutral or when i am in first with the clutch pulled in. It sorta sounds like ticking or light rattling around the front or gear casing i think.. the exhaust it came with is pretty loud so its harder to pinpoint.. any ideas. im sorta worried cuse this is my first bike and i bought it almost brand new off of someone. dont want to have messed it up already.
rickcash26 11-01-2010, 02:01 PM As everyones stated above it could be your cam chain tensioner. I cleaned out my horribly dirty air filter over the weekend and it saounds like brand new. Maybe my bike was just not getting enough clean air. Idk but I'm still gonna go with a new manual CCT.
DjDude 11-23-2010, 08:08 AM Hmmm i have this noise as well.. just after a bunch of work i have done to the thing.. i think its my cam tensioner...
twinb228 01-21-2012, 07:30 PM I have a 2006 GSXR 1000 and when I first start it it does a ticking/thumping noise, but when I pull in the clutch it goes away but then again when I let off the noise comes back until the engine is warm. But also when in neutral and no matter what the temp is when ever the clutch is released I get an extra vibration on the handles. The clutch has just been tightened some and I am not sure what is causing the ticking and vibration??

Not to be a bitch but this is the K8/10 600/750 forum. Maybe someone here can help but this should be in the appropriate (K5/6 1000) as 1000's have a forum just for them whereas the 600/750's have to share. With that said, you revived a thread from 2010 in a forum not specific to your bike (year or CC's).

wrong subforum, but anyway...
the extra sound you hear is probably the transmission input shaft spinning. more parts move when the clutch lever is out. is it only just slight and you may be overreacting? if it is prominent, give some more clues.
