I've had very good experiences with New Balance, including running a marathon - at a body weight of 220lbs... For a specific model, try some out to see what fits best

I only wear new balance. I have very wide feet and they've never let me down.

New Balance does make some good shoes. The most important thing is to get a shoe that is matched to your foot type with regards to pronation, etc. Specialty stores are much better for fitting you. Most shoes are above $70, but you should be able to find an '03 model on closeout that'll work just fine, or maybe a good sale. I work in a running store, if you have any questions, just ask.

Computer problem helped cause a double post. Never mind this 2nd post. I should probably think of something useful to say here. And yeah, I advertised the fact that I sell shoes. A few days a week, I walk among giants such as Al Bundy.

Go into a specialised running shop - ask for help and try out a load of different shoes - avoid buying running shoes over the net when you are starting out.

First off you need to know whether you are a neutral runner or wether you under or over pronate. If you have done a fair few miles in old running shoes they will often be able to tell if you pronate just by looking at the wear on the bottom of your shoes.

If you need a stability shoe and you dont buy one you will be plagued by knee problems as you increase your weekly mileage.

always buy a size up from the size you would normally buy for walking around in or you will get blisters.

Always throw running trainers away after 400 - 500 miles even if they still look like they are in good condition - especially if your heavy footed. Be sure that you will get ankle and knee problems if you run a lot and you dont.

The great thing about New Balances is that have variable width fittings so they are great for people with wide feet.

I have a pair of New balance B 854's for ultramarthon distance trial running in Sand / very hot running as the extra width allowss room for my feet to swell in the heat - New balances have great cushoining shoes if your heavy footed to.

For fell and cross country running I use Saucony grid approaches as the have great grip and good feel for running down slippery rockey muddy hillsides.

For road running and racing I use Mizuno's because they are light and very efficient for neutral runners. I use wave riders and wave creations - althought the wave riders dont last long if I train in them a lot (about 2 months before I have to chuck them out - at £75 a go that can get expensive)
