: Undertail exhaust?

Okay, since the Street Fighters are the most creative of the bunch, i've got an interesting couple of questions for you...

I want to install an undertail exhaust on my 1998 GSXR600. I think i've figured out the routing, and know i'll have to do some fine tuning.

I've thought about using a Honda CBR600R exhaust and mounting it under my current tail. I've also thought about mounting my Yosh RS-3.

Now, the deal on the RS-3 is that it's an old style with the bolts instead of the rivets, so maybe I could shorten the pipe? My question with that is how will it affect HP, or noise, etc? Yosh told me that shortening the pipe makes more top end power, but you lose the low end.

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Well, overall length is the key, not length of the muffler part, so I wouldn't worry too much about shortening the thing a little. I've tuned exhausts for cars before and there is a bit of room to play before you really gimp things up. I'd guess you could take six or eight inches off a bike exhaust without being able o tell the difference. Where it starts to make a difference is when you have a wide open exhaust and you lose all back pressure.

As far as noise, well, the more of the muffler you have, the more you'll muffle the sound. If you chop half of it off, you'll get pretty intense noise. I don't actually know what the inside of an RS-3 looks like so I don't know how complicated it would be to cut one down without losing sound baffling.

Thank you, that actually makes alot of sense.

When i talked to Yosh, I was told that they had 18" cans and 20" cans. The main diffrence was the 20" can seemed to give more low and mid range, and the shorter pipe gave more at the higher RPM range. But even he admitted that very few tuners would be able to notice the difference.

Now, the reason why I posted this question in this forum is because I had seen several S-F's with shortened cans and was wondering how much of a diffrence it made. If I keep the Yosh can (I really like the sound), how much of a hassle will I run into?

Thank you, and please keep the advice coming!

Well, I went and picked up the 600RR exhaust today. Boy is it neat-o looking! The pipe is actually oval. Now comes the fun part of trying to make it work...
