I'm wondering what causes more air to go past the radiator

Comments on theories most welcome.

Just a guess (locked down) based on an old HS experiment in science class (that I don't remember the physics behind it...).

If you take a balsa wood rubber band airplane -- now take the rubber band off and toss the plane -- it doesn't fly well; put the rubber band on and do not wind it up -- toss the airplane - it flies better.

I think it had to do with free-wheeling causes more and unpredictable turbulence.. but honestly; I don't recall the actual reason.

There is no way the electric fan pushes the volume of air through the radiator as what goes through when the bike is going over 60 MPH. The fan doesn't push the air at that speed either. I don't know how much the fan gets in the way when its free wheeling, but it's not enough to prevent the coolant from cooling the engine. Their probably isn't any significant gains to be had by altering the fan system, as it work efficiently on cars and motorcycles.

your post really doesnt make any sense.

Are you trying to ask what would allow more air to pass through the radiator while at cruising speed?

out of curiousity, what is the purpose of your question? It's a very odd one and i'm sure most members are perplexed also.

At 60mph, who cares what your fan is doing considering it's most likely off. No bike should have any overheating issues at 60mph, and if you do, and the above are your alternatives, you have a much bigger problem at hand.

It's like asking, what is more cooling when you sprint? A drifit tshirt, a tank top, or a cutoff.

and to answer your question, having the fan on serves no purpose at that speed since 60mph winds can force air much faster than a measley plastic fan.

Why not let the computer control the fan?
