My friend has a 2004 katana 600 and the other day he went to check his bike ( he has not ridden for about a year) and he said his oil window was gone, and oil was all over the floor. Is this window glass or plastic Is there a way this is supposed to come off or is it on there perminitaly?
anyone ever have this happen? or know what could have caused this?
thanks
The only times I've seen that happen were through direct impact with something pointy :dunno
I don't know about the Kat specifically but often the window is just kept in place with a lock ring from the outside. Remove that with lock ring pliers, ply the rests of the window out carefully and change the O-ring that keeps it tight while you are at it.
If there's no lock ring you'll have to open the engine to change it :( In that case you MIGHT be able to do reach it by just taking the oil pan off - but again, I don't have any specific experience with that particular bike...
Come to think of it, if the window is completely gone, the lock ring might have gone AWOL and left the window unsecured :dunno Look for a groove around the opening.
I just checked the microfiche:
http://fiche.ronayers.com/Index.cfm/Module/Main/TypeID/26/Type/Motorcycle/MakeID/2/Make/Suzuki/YearID/45/Year/2004/ModelID/6307/Model/GSX600F_KATANA/GroupID/258954/Group/CRANKCASE_COVER
On that model the oil window is in the clutch cover, it's part #2 in that link. Looks like it IS just a lock ring on the outside keeping it in place. Easy fix :)

lol yea i was about to say...open the engine? All you have to do is remove the clutch cover and replace the lens if you can.
if a 99 750 clutch cover will fit...I have some for sale :thumbup

I was just guessing about the lock, works that way on some bikes and it COULD look like there's one holding the window in the fiche :dunno
Is there a groove on the inside edge of the hole?
Just for the record I was talking about a lock ring or circlip like this:

call bikebandit or ronayers while looking at the fiche and explain to them what happened, they will make sure you order the right stuff
