Hi Guy's,

I've got a 100% stock 2001 Gixxer 1000 and I'm hoping I can get some feedback on an exhaust dilemma. (purchased about 6 mths back)

I installed a dealer switch last week (Thanks BugMan!) and the C-46 error comes up quite often which is the Exhaust set valve test problem which is a very common issue with this model.

Evidently a removed the middle pipe and checked the valve action, cleaned it, re adjusted the pullies according to the svc manual. Seems better and appears to have full action in the test open and shut movement. No issues yet, but I'm not convinced the issue is gone for good as so many people throw them in the bin.

I'm looking at a few options moving forward and I'd like to know anyones experience or thoughts on this.

1) Remove the "set valve" mechanism and run it without the valve with the stock muffler as is

2) As above but put a bolt on sport muffler for better flow.

Would option 1 or 2 require a remap\tune or should it be ok?

On a budget here as I just purchased a new house so I dont want to put too much $$ into the bike so a full sport system and re map isn't an option.

Thanks

Update........ I purchased a Yoshi slip on muffler

It has a stainless lead pipe therefore completely eliminating the exhaust valve.

Can anyone advise on whether tuning was required after fitting a slip on of this type or any?

Cheers

It is a good idea, so as to avoid a lean condition, especially if you would like to upgrade to a reusable air cleaner. Skilled tuner's can use a TEKA which reprograms your fuel curve on your existing eprom, or you could look for an aftermarket piggy back system like a Power Commander.

Read the instructions with the slip on. It should have something in them about joining a couple of wires once you take out the exhaust valve mechanism. You don't have to tune it after fitting a slip on,. But if you run a PC or EMS it will smooth out the whole power delivery and produce a few more HP.

Thanks Guy's. I'm starting to like the idea of getting a Power Commander.

I'll see how it goes with the slip on muffler then look to getting a PC and air filter for it soon.

There is a brown wire that needs to be pulled from the ECU, it should be shown in the Yosh directions. Back when I had a yosh shorty slipon before the TiForce system, it ran good without reprogramming the ECU. Now its Teka tuned with a few other mods and runs unbelievably great. Go Teka way easier and no issues.

I have my K2 1000 for five years now, I started to get the SET valve error code after 9 months of owning her. After adjusting the cables so that I had the required voltage or resistance [ cant remember which cus it was so long ago ] I have had no problems with it four years later. Cant see why it is so much of a drama and pple ditch the SET valve.

I might still have one that I pulled off of my '01 1000 shortly after I got it. What would it be worth to you?

By the way, you need to purchase a RED R, if you are going to be buying or selling here.

Thanks,
Jeff

I'll buy the stock 01/02 GSXR 1000 muffler from you if nobody else has. The one with the x40F0x stamped on it. Email me at mercegr(at)auburn.edu and we can work out a price and payment.

I sold the muffler long ago, so you might buy a Red R and post an ad in the classifieds.
