: Unusual rear tire wear?

Has anyone see tire wear like this? I have never seen this before and I'm trying to find out what is causing it. My tires have a good amount of miles on them, but there is still plenty of tread and i'm not even close to the wear bars. Any help would be appreciated.

How old are the tires?

+1 on air pressure

it looks like you are riding too hard on a cold tire.

The tires are less than a year old and have about 10k miles on them I think. And I run 32psi f/r daily. Check them regularly and never seen them lower than 29psi before I topped them off at 32 again.

I still think you are riding too hard on a cold tire. You can try to slightly lower the tire pressure so they will warm a little bit faster.

is this consistant over the entire side of the tire? or is it only in spots around the tire? if its the second, your compression is off. add 1/4 turn to hard, or 1/2 turn to hard, and the issue should go away.

@a.leopard: i won't say that i'm not, but i do try to keep it easy for first few miles any time i get on the bike. i live about a half mile from the freeway and just kind of cruise for the first five to ten minutes at freeway speeds. is there a better way to warm the tires up? is 32psi too high?
@DemonRR: it is actually right down the center of the tire. but yes, it is consistent around the entire tire.

take a couple more pics of the tire. but pull the camera back a little so i can get some kind of visual depth of the tire. from that close, its real hard to see the issue.

is it just me or doesn't everyone here go by the 36 front/42 rear psi rule of thumb?

ya i do the 36 42 rule. i also take the long way out of my neighborhood and do my left right left right swerves to help warm my tires. i also had a buddy run his rr on a tire with like 12 psi once, it harmed the tire but not like that, it more or less put extreme wear on the inside n cut the outer edge. n no he is not mechanically inclined.

demonrr: sorry about the picture, i was trying to get in close to provide a detailed picture of the affected area. anyways here it is.

alexjm: thanks buddy! and that's why i'm here. i admit i am still a newb with only about 5 years of riding experience total. i try to get good information from others with more experience than myself. one of the guys at the dealership told me that i should run about 32psi when riding on the streets due to our climate, etc.. and some other other guys i have ridden with agreed. but i am not opposed to trying new things.

Gixxer Kat: Thanks for your info also. i also swerve left to right to help accelerate the process of warming the tires. maybe a i'll try a longer route.

and do my left right left right swerves to help warm my tires.

Swerving left to right does not heat up your tires, it will clean the dead layer off your tires but that is it. To heat up the carcass of the tire you need heavy acceleration and braking or tire warmers.

+1....its just to clean the shit off :cheers

As for that tire wear im not sure. could just be wear and tear ok 10K miles

Nice to know about the swerves.
Also isnt 10k kinda high for bike tires? I also know it depends on the tire but my pilots are said to be rated around 7k street use. Thats just rear of course.

Don't know. I'm running 2.1-2.2bar/31-32 psi in my rear tire (it's metz M3) and everything seems to be ok.

depends on the tire. If your using pilot road 2's then 10K is common. I get around 5~6K on my pilot power 2ct's

first of all put 42 in the rear, then change your compression damping by about half a turn to harder and rebound damping to quarter turn softer the tire is chattering when your in a high speed turn and there are a little bit of rough road(likely on the freeway in bridge curves)

thanks man... i'll look into all that tonight. i don't know anything about suspension tuning so i want to be extra careful with adjustments. don't want to adjust the wrong one the wrong way or something. it did feel like the rear tire was a bit chattery once, but i was talking to some guys i was riding with and they said it was just that area. something about how the wind funnels in on the particular turn on windy days. point taken!!

also, not arguing... just asking, isn't 42 a bit much?

i hear alot of guys say they only get somewhere between 4k - 7k miles but they pretty much only ride they're bike for fun. i do alot of highway miles commuting to work. i keep an eye on the wear bars and i'm still nowhere close to them. i changed my first set out last year at about 12k miles and they still weren't down to the wear bars yet.

Its max but it keeps your tire from wearing quickly since you commute so much. If you go for a day of twisties just let some of the air out...36ish should be good. Also spend the $50 to get your suspension tuned its a night and day difference :cheers

you need to ride your bike harder :lol

these are high performance machines with high performance parts ment to do high performance things

not a bad idea... might try running a higher tire pressure. and i'll just have to suck it up and get the suspection tuned. i know it will make it better, i just have been lazy.

is 160mph high performance? lol! i try to get out as much as i can and hit the twisties, but i love to ride my bike so much that i also ride to work everyday that i can. with a 60 mile rountrip commute, that is where most of my miles come from. i know it ain't just about speed... the guys i ride with are veterans compared to me so i try to keep up with them while staying in my comfort zone. lol! but following them through the twisties allows me to watch what a better rider does and has helped me learn alot over time. still a long ways to go!!!

:scratch you guys really do like your high tire pressures. you do realize the recomended tire pressures are for OEM tires only. not replacements.

michelin 2ct's 120/70 front (33psi cold) and 190/55 rear (31 psi cold) on my liter bike (street only). been riding on 2ct's and this pressure for 3 sets of tire and never had any issues, slips, slide outs, ect, and perfect tire wear.

I am still running the "stock" tires. I still run the Battlax BT016s which are the tire Suzuki puts on the bike out of the factory. I heard there is a difference betwen the OEM and aftermarket 016s but I heard that the difference is neglible. Haven't done the research myself so I can't promise anything. I figured I am still a novice so I won't be able to tell the difference anyway. Anyways, my point being... I think the BT016s are rated for 40f/40r. Or something close to that.

Not sure if where you live has anything to do with tire pressure? N e one know the answer to that?
Also i go by what my shop says. am i saying they r always right, no not at all. still they have more history then me and many more tack days and say thats the best for my tires.
