My b/f just got back from the dr. He's 6'1 250 and just turned 28 yrs. old, he's not a fatso, he's really strong. He's also a non-drinker and non-smoker. The dr. told him he needs to lose weight asap. The doctor is a liver specialist, and suggested the Atkins or South beach diet. I'm trying to get him to do the same diet as me. The dr. wants him to have little/no carbs, and to lose weight. Do you guys think he'd be okay on the high protein low carb diet? Does anyone have any suggestions to modify to "please" a bigger guy (obviously he's going to want to eat more than I do, and my portions won't please him). I told him he needs to hit the gym once a day with me (i have the ability with my job to go 2x a day, but he doesn't). Also, what kind of workout does he need to do? Like the 30-40 min. of cardio + weights? Help please. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

The dr said go on atkins?!!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wtf.gif
By the sound of your post... I think you already know the correct approach. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Make him eat healthy ( but man portions http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) , and get him in the gym for 30-45 min cardio + lifting. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

Yeah I said the same thing... the dr. said atkins?? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif He also suggested the South Beach diet??
I'm thinking about grilling up a crapload of chicken right now. For lunch/dinner. I just went to the market and stocked up on veggies, rice, chicken, fruit, salad, and cottage cheese (I got a flavored kind to try since the other i'm not a fan of).
I told him he should do my diet, but he was like "the doctor said, the doctor said." I think the doctor suggested the atkins diet because it's a "quick lose". But if I can get him to the gym 6-7 days a week and get him to quit eating steak samiches and hoagies, I think he'll be like me and lose quick.
Thanks for replying so fast spidey http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

First of all what was the Dr.'s reasoning for telling your boyfriend he needs to lose weight? Second of all this is a typical case of a Dr. not understanding basic physiology and nutrition. Why in gods name would a Dr. who is a liver specialist recommend a high protein diet. To put it in it's simplist form, in order for you body to process protein your body needs to get ride of an extra nitrogen molecule. This in turn leads to a nitrogen imbalance in your system. The only wat to rid the body of the nitrogen is through your urine. The liver is responsible for seperating this molecule for the blood stream so the nitrogen can be excreted, this puts extra stress on the liver as well as the kidneys.
If your b/f does not have a problem with his liver or kidneys he could try a high protein diet and see how it effects him. Just make sure he drinks plenty of water ( 1-1.5 gallions) to flush toxins such as the extra nitrogen.. If he is going to try the Atkins diet, I would suggest reading the book first. Most people equate Atkins with high protein, low carb, but if you read the book you will see there is much more to it.
As far as a workout goes jsut make sure he starts off slow and works his way up to longer sessions. Incorporate cardio with weight training to achieve maximal results
