: bike running like crap
97gixxer252X8 05-31-2010, 02:39 PM i was riding on the freeway doin 70. then all of a sudden my bike felt like it was bogged down. no matter how much i ripped the throttle back it didnt seem to do anything.like i had no more torque. so i pull overandwhen i go to start the bike it sound different. when i rev it. it doesnt have thenormal kinda high pitched sound. it putters when i put a load on it and try to go in first. any clues?oh yeaand it backfires alot now. used to only do it if i was high revin and wntback to idle all of a sudden. now evenat 3k it will backfire
F.I.SRAD750 05-31-2010, 03:48 PM sounds like its a possible timing issue. or maybe bad gas. ive had it run really bad on bad fuel.
Dencho 05-31-2010, 04:20 PM Yea, maybe the timing jumped a tooth.
I would start by checking that out, there is a sticky in the SRAD section
about the CCT replacement, i believe it also explains how to check your timing.
Good luck, and post up.
TT750 05-31-2010, 07:56 PM if it is the ctt you may not want to run the engine till you check the cam timing.
GreenDayFreakRct 05-31-2010, 08:22 PM Don't forget your best friend spark plugs! They could be fouled!
Knuckles GSXR 05-31-2010, 08:34 PM im goin to go with 95% chance you jumped teeth on your cam sprockets spark plugs arent goin to all the sudden foul and make the bike sound different. when your bike is out of time it tends to back fire.
Knuckles GSXR 05-31-2010, 08:35 PM does the bike had a kinda rattling sound comming from the right side of the motor? you should be able to hear it with the bike just idling
GSXR-Freak 06-01-2010, 09:42 AM Once the chain jumps, you may no longer hear the rattle on the right side. :(
If you have the OE CCT in the motor, I would not run it till you can check the cam timing, It is the most common cause of problems like this and the more you run it, the more chance you have of causing more problems.

Lean With It 06-01-2010, 10:16 AM can the manual cct be installed without fiddling with the timing? (if you know the timing is good - bike runs good) I just want to install the mcct without taking the valve cover off and everything - can that be done? Recommended?
GSXR-Freak 06-01-2010, 11:05 AM I hear of people that do this without any problems. My fear is, with no pressure on the chain, it would give the option for the cam to rotate and jump a tooth.
I would pull the cover and ziptie the chain down to the cam.

piester 06-01-2010, 02:31 PM i have installed an mcct on a motor while in the bike and while not in the bike. both without removing the valve cover. as long as you dont rotate the motor you will be fine. just pull the old ont out slowly. adjust the manual one so it its almost the same length. instal the manual. and adjust it acording to the install guide. easy.the chain can only jump teeth if one of the sprockets is manualy turned.
TT750 06-01-2010, 02:35 PM the pressure of the valve springs on the cam lobe could cause it to turn. its only a few more minutes for the peace of mind..
Dencho 06-01-2010, 03:13 PM Yea man, i wouldn't take the risk of putting everything back together with the timing off.
That can lead to bigger issues, just my 2 cents.

Really?
Your willing to risk the thousands of dollars in parts and work that it would take to save 15 minutes?
I take a lot of risks on my bikes, this is NOT one of them.
Ask around on here and see how bad a CCT install gone wrong can be.

hohoho. I don't think I installed it wrong, but John sure is right! Scariest thing to have that tensioner pop out!
And in the begining of summer my bike screwed up bad while riding. She wouldnt idle high at all, and sounded like crap all of a sudden while riding. The bike would'nt idle for crap either. I took a look at my plugs and somehow they turned very black. Changed them and the bike ran fine. After that I changed my CCT while I had the bike apart and well yeah...lets say I almost crashed and died because of that small little part :(
GSXR-Freak 06-01-2010, 07:00 PM Well your not the only one that has had a install go bad, be it your own install, or because someone tried to take a shortcut.
Fact is, unless the MCCT is stripped out or broken, it is hard to blame a failure on it. It is a very basic part that has VERY little to fail.
Fact is, the CCT is a very vital part to the motor running. A small mistake makes a HUGE problem. But the factory unit is just not worth it to me.
