: Egg whites for breakfast and the nutritional content?
I've heard from a few people who eat them for breakfast and am leaning in that direction. One says to use 6 egg whites to make an omlet and the other says to cook 10 with three egg yolks every morning. Right now, I eat a pop tart and a diet Mtn Dew for breakfast. This is SO wrong and now that I am all set to start my sixth week back into lifting, I thought it only right to start eating better as well. I am self employed and work from home so my diet should be perfect and I need some help on it. I weight 248lbs and am 6' tall. I'm trying to put on mass right now and will start to trim down in another couple months. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks fellas/felletes http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Well, for those interested, here are some nutritional facts about eggs:
An egg has 6 grams of protein with it being split equally between the white and yolk. The entire egg is 71 calories with 3/4 of that being the yolk. The egg yolk is also the only natural food that produces vitamin D.
So, if I grill up ten egg whites and three egg yolks, that would make my nutritional content 39 grams of protein and 338 calories. My current pop tart/Diet Mtn Dew breakfast is 200 calories and a whopping 2 grams of protein.
SicShift 03-07-2004, 02:35 PM 3 egg yolks per day is waaay too much fat and cholesterol. Egg yolks have about 4-6 grams of fat per yolk. I would stick to no more than 2 per day and if you're trying to lose weight, don't eat more than 1.
As for eating ten whites, I'd say that's a bit much for you. Your body wont absorb that much anyway. Stick to 6 or under or at least split them up through the day in 2 meals. As for grilling, make sure you're using pam spray oil. Otherwise, if you're using regular oil or butter, you're adding a huge amount of fat to that meal.
Egg whites however are one of the most perfect muscle building foods out there. They naturally carry no bacterial content and therefor can be kept in the fridge for very long periods of time without ever going bad.
They have no fat or carbohydrates in them. They have about 16 calories which comes to around 4 grams of protein average.
Once you eat them for a while, you won't miss the yolk so much. If that's what you're used to, ween yourself off then. Start with 2 whole eggs and a couple whites and then go down to 1 whole egg and the rest whites, then 1/2 a yolk and the rest whites etc. etc.
I make a 5 egg white scramble every morning with about 1/4- 1/2 of an egg yolk for some color basically.
Egg whites have a very high bio availablitiy factor which means they are absorbed by the body for muscle repair very easily.

So, you do five egg whites each morning then? What else do you eat/drink with that? What is your size?

I'm nearly 6' and 245lbs.
I take 4-5 egg whites, a part of a yoke and throw in some green onions and then put a little cajun spice over it and sometimes light sour cream and it's pretty good.
When I'm putting on muscle or just didn't have enough protein, I'll eat a few more whites in the afternoon or after dinner.
I usually have a couple pieces of whole wheat toast or some oatmeal along with it.

Haha.. I just realized I said 'do'. I meant, how many do you eat? haha... that's pretty funny. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
When you eat oatmeal, is it cool to put rasins in it? I have to eat my oatmeal with rasins. That is the other item I was going to start to eat. Do you use milk for the oatmeal or milk? How much oatmeal, about half a cup or a full cup (prepared)?

Raisins are fine. I love them too. Just try not to put much sugar in it. I use splenda a lot asa sugar subsitute. I use skim milk. I just don't like any other kind. Eat whatever you need just don't stuff yourself. I usually don't have more than half a cup but I'm also losing weight and I eat every three hours so I have smaller meals. It all depends on your goals and stuff.

It's gotta be skim. I used to drink 2% and when I first moved out of my mom's place 8 years ago, one of my roomates was a body builder and he said 'Switch to skim and after a week you won't be able to drink the other stuff.' He was right. Now, anything above skim tastes like drinking butter. 2% is doable, but I do prefer skim.
Like I said, I will have the days to myself and have for the past year. There is no reason other than lazyness that I am not in the best shape of my life as I have all the time I need. I can run a couple miles at my fat burning taret heart rate (and plan to star this again in another month or so) and lift at 4:00. I can also eat smaller meals all day long as I know this will speed up my metabolism and need some of that love.
Would you mind taking a moment to list a day or two and the meals and times you eat them, or idealy what and when you would eat it.. either way. Thanks.
Hey Jer Try this For Breakie Sometime..I have been addicted to this Recipe for awhile now
1/2 Cup Quick Oats
1/2 Cup Cottage cheese
1 egg
4 Egg Whites (I have started to only use Egg whites, and it tastes just fine)
Blend that up, and then add a Teaspoon of Vanilla, and Some Cinnamon, and say 1-2 packs of Sweet and low. Mix up again, and Fry it up in a Non Stick Frying pan, like you would pancakes. Man Talk about good stuff http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif I got Sick Of having just scrambled up Eggs and Egg whites, So when i found this, I was hooked!! As for the Egg Whites..SicShift is right on the money. try 1 egg and like 4-6 Egg whites if your going to have eggs in the morning!!
GdSaXnR 03-07-2004, 05:42 PM I eat at least a full cup of oats every morning. At first it may give you the shits a little, but you'll get used to it in a few days. Oats have awesome complex carbs and the soluble fiber is supposed to help keep your cholesterol low. I will buy the boxes of flavored instant oatmeal, and mix it with an equal amount of unflavored "quick oats" out of the big cans. You can't really get much cheaper than this. Throw in a protein shake and you are talking about a decent breakfast/an early meal in 5 minutes at the most. You can also hard boil the eggs to make it easier/faster in the morning or as a later meal. Easy to separate the yolk from the white. I always eat one yolk, and the rest whites when I eat eggs myself.
Day one on the eggs and man... that doesn't have a whole lot of flavor. I just hope I can keep doing it. The recipe above sounds alright, but I don't like cottage cheese or cinnamon. I may try it w/o those and see if I like it still.
ryu750 03-08-2004, 02:43 AM I to do 5 whites and one whole.. makes for a great breakfast..

You won't tate the Cottage Cheese if you blend it up. Unless your alergic to it, or it just freaks you out, give it a shot! Plus its quite high in Protien too

Now yer talking. I loves me some skim milk. I used to drink about a gallon every other day and was afraid that much was unhealthy.
oldgixxer 03-08-2004, 10:40 AM It's not unhealthy, although I completely eliminate it to lose that last few % of BF...I drink about a gallon a day http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
GdSaXnR 03-08-2004, 12:47 PM Doesn't milk have a very simple glyceride in it? This would make it bad to drink it in such excess wouldn't it?? SImple carbs?

That sounds pretty crazy I'll have to give it a try. Getting tired of eating 4 whites with cottage chesse on it and half cup of oatmeal every morning. I'll have to cook it on my next day off.
SicShift 03-08-2004, 01:38 PM Here's what I do that makes them a little more palatable.
This makes enough for about a week.
Buy 1 red, orange and yellow bell pepper. (I don't like the green ones at all)
1 bunch of green onions.
optional things are tomatos, garlic, regular onion, mushrooms.
Take these things, dice them all up into very small pieces and put them in a tupperware bin.
Then I make my egg white scramble and throw a handful of that mix in with it and a little chopped up ham. The mix should be enough for 4 or 5 servings worth.
When it's done, I put a little cajun seasoning on or use some salsa and light sour cream. Makes a great breakfast scramble with no additional time consumed except about 20 minutes of prep work once a week.
another good one that my GF makes is:
half a bagel toasted, 3 or so eggwhites that are flipped on top of each other. Put it on the bagel then stack on a thin slice of onion, a slice of tomato and use a large lettuce leaf as the other side of the bagel.
She uses this awesome korean seaweed seasoning in the eggs but I don't know if you guys can find that stuff. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
soysauce021 03-08-2004, 03:13 PM for oatmeal, my friend got me hooked on peanut butter and oatmeal. Just add a lil scoop of PB to your oats, add water, microwave as normal. Then mix it up when it comes out. Tastes good. Add a lil bit of cinnamon if you like also.

You don't drink milk, milk is for babies. When you grow up you have to drink beer.
GdSaXnR 03-08-2004, 03:54 PM I was actually talking about the shit you buy in the store, but whatever comforts you. The lactose in milk is what I am talking about. Granted there is a lot of good things that are gained out of milk, but if you are trying to cut all the simple carbs, that would be a place to go.
By the way, I wen to Sam's Club and bought 15 dozen eggs to get me through this month. Looks like I'm on the egg bandwagon.

Yep me too. After you get use to whites regular eggs just don't taste as good. I like herdez salsa on mine- if time I like to cut up veggies. Sometimes I will through a little bit of potato in too-of course its carbs but tastes good.

no problem with carbs here. I don't regulate the amount. I make sure I eat some with every meal and a lot before my workouts and after.
Sun Burn 03-08-2004, 11:23 PM I have a question about the oatmeal. I eat a packet of oatmeal every morning as part of my breakfast but when people say I eat a half cup of oatmeal or I eat a full cup of oats are they measuring it as prepared or unprepared. Due to expansion of the oats and the addition of water one cup of prepared oatmeal would be a lot less than measuring one cup of oats and then adding water. I just want to make sure I'm getting enough fiber and complex carbs. Thanks
beanfield 03-09-2004, 02:09 AM I've been eating 6 egg whites every morning with some salsa. It tastes pretty good..
Yeah, I loved salsa on eggs and didn't even think of that yesterday. I scrambled them today like I would a regular agg and added some salsa and that kicked ass.

I always took it as before cooking. Same as rice. Stuff like this changes after you put water in it, depending on how much water you put in it. Rice is also different whether you use regular rice or minute rice I noticed. I eat about 1 cup of oatmeal (unprepared). I use a packet of flavored and then just spoon some quick oats into it out of the can. Like I said before, one of the best, cheapest source of good carbs.
