So a couple of days ago my onboard sound dies. Tried reinstalling the drivers, no change. Windows says it's working.
So I try putting in a sound card. XP sees it, grabs all the drivers, says it's working right. But no sound.
And no, it's not the speakers. Plug them into my laptop and they work fine. Any ideas?

You did disable the onboard sound while installing the sound card? I don't mean just remove the drivers. Usually there's a physical jumper or something that has to be changed. Check the motherboard specs, or the manufacturer website (faqs) for instructions. It may be interfering with the new card since the 'onboard' is malfunctioning. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif

what he said you should be able to go to your computers hardware profile and disable the on-board sound there or try going into bios and turning it off there and see if that makes any difference in the sound.

No jumpers on the board, but I didn't think about the BIOS, I'll try that, thanks.

Yeah, I'm used to slightly older mobos. I forgot some of that stuff is BIOS switchable. Hope that's the cure for ya. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

You almost always have to disable on-board devices when you add new ones to most modern pcs. (NIC,Sound, sometimes Video)

Never had to with video. At least not with my home machine, or any of the ones at work.
