: Need Help with freakin Pop Ups PLEASE!!!!
here is my problem..
For the last couple days my computer is being over taken by popups. I have cable connection and if leaving my computer on and nothing running my computer gets taken over by pop ups. Now I know it is due to still being connected to the internet, that is not my issue..
My issue is how do I stop this from happening.. And what in the blue hell all of the sudden caused this to happen??
Please help me, I am in desperate need of removing this crap. I am running windows Xp and have the google tool bar with pop up blocker activeated, yet it still does not stop them.. I have run adware and spybot search and destroy, and still no solution. I have disabled messenger in my control panel as well.
Thanks in advance for any and all help..

hammerdown 02-28-2004, 12:04 PM Use the panicwear pop up stopper, it is a free edition or you can go with the gusto for 30 bucks more. . . Also go to www.cnet.com (http://www.cnet.com) and download the latest version of AD AWARE. . http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
gixxer1kfreak 02-28-2004, 02:04 PM The best program out there is SPYBOT...
Go to http://www.safer-networking.org
Download it it's free. Make sure you run an Update after you install it.
Then run the Immunize program and then run the Search and Destroy...
My opinion it's the best out there for Spyware...I install it on all me clients pc's.
Let me know how you make with this....
sdr2ent 02-28-2004, 03:57 PM run spybot, and adaware and install the google toolbar on your browser and activate the pop-up blocker i never get pop-ups
gixxerman 02-28-2004, 05:24 PM I get pop ups sometimes. I've been using the google pop up blocker. That catches the majority of them. I do however have a problem sometimes when you click on a link and it takes you to something totally different. Haven't been able to figure that one out yet.

ikachu 02-28-2004, 05:26 PM If you are getting popups on your desktop without running Explorer or anything, it is possible that you have the 'Messenger' service enabled. This is not related to Windows Messenger, it is actually a tool that is supposed to be used in a business environment so people can send network-wide advisories to computers, but for some reason Microsoft enabled it by default.
To disable it, go to Control Panel, then Administrative Tools, then Services. Find 'Messenger' then hit the 'stop' button (black square). Then go to Action->Properties and check the startup mode to disabled.
Hope this helps!

Good advice. You might also want to invest in a firewall. Not only to keep the messenger service from being exploited, but also to keep other services from being exploited.
Gixxer9 03-02-2004, 03:54 PM Mozilla Firefox......free, fast, built in popup blocker, etc.....after you get it cleaned up of course.

lokimarine 03-03-2004, 10:30 AM Best pop-up stopper is AnalogX iPOW. It runs in the task bar, and when you get a pop-up on the screen you just right click POW and add that pop-up to the block list. Then if any webpage with the same title tried to load, it will be stopped.
