What am i going to have trouble with when starting out? Only ridden my x's (PAT's) bike on a straight away (highway). heard that it's hard to brake down a hill for some people. is that true?

I have a "how to ride a bike" manual somewhere at home with all the tips and trics,... in it. I'll upload it and pm you the url when I get home from work.

There are many things that you have to learn to do when you ride. I consider obstacle avoidance as one of the most important things. I know a few people out there wishing that they would have learned this. It is something that can and will help you keep your bike upright. . .

If you take the MSF course everything from being able to walk the bike to obstacle avoidance will be covered. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

The point being, you'll still be learning years after you've started riding.

That said, the first thing that I found difficult was getting used to leaning into the turns and feeling comfortable leaning the bike over. Everything is easy once you can see the corner and plant the bike where it needs to be.

The worst part about learning to ride is the slow speed maneuvars.

Once up to speed riding isn't hard as long as you follow some basic rules.

Never panic, on a GSXR if you panic brake without experience you will either flip or lock the front.

When leaning in a turn, look where you WANT to go not where your heading. (have seen many newbies fall victim to this)

If you can handle the starting it isn't so bad. Learning to make your left and right turns on to a road or out of the parking lot are tricky. CHEAT AS MUCH AS YOU CAN. There is a whole lane so use it. For example if you are making a right turn at a stop sign, start on the left side of your lane and as you pull up to the stop sign start your turn so you are at an easier angle to the road you want to go on. There is no reason to be perpendicular to the road.

I would suggest the MSF course to help get your license in Ohio. The test will be easier on something beside a GSXR. Example the little 125cc bikes, or a standard 600 (bandit, secaII).

The GSXR's don't have much lock to lock steering so the Slolom is darn near impossible. (I couldn't do it on my gsxr). 5mph is too fast to get through the slolom.

The OH test is all about slow riding, you will not get above 15-17 mph.

I would say starting out on a hill http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/squid.gif and left turns http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/squid.gif I have made MANY MANY mistakes with the above but have learned valuable lessons along the way http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif Also, I would say buy something cheap and small to learn on, you'll be thankful! My first time on a bike was on my husbands 750 and that was a http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/nono.gif I had no control and didnt have the confidence to focus 100% My husband went out and bought me a Ninja 250 and thats when I learned to ride and learned the right way. I wish you luck and please say Hi in the girls forum, we have some girls in there that can put some of these men to shame http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/flipa.gif

goto a large empty parking lot where there is less stress to worry about. Pratice your riding getting use to the bike and turns. After which pratice the brakes during turns and on straights, front, back brake, same time one after each other etc....do everything slowly and depending on you, you will find out whats hard or not... The parking lot is your friend.

A friend of mine crashed while learning on a parking lot and the insurance wouldn't pay. Cost him 3.000$...

Yes, be very careful in a parking lot.
they're very inconsistent surfaces...so stick to the driven-areas and scout for loose gravel/dirt before doing anything.

insurance wouldn't cover it in the parking lot? All you got to say is some freaken cat ran our in front of you when you were going throught there and hit your brakes to hard. if you have full coverage who the heck cares? And no it isn't insurance fraud cause your the one that has been paying that over $100 bucks in insurance so you should get that back sooner or later. I'd say later on go ahead and drop your bike again. Get almost all the money possible out of it, and go to liability. If they wanna keep charging tons of money for those who actually responsible people and not even give them their money when they need it, get it out of them one way or the other. Don't switch to liablilty without getting a good full coverage claim first. Not that I intended it that way, but how do you think my bike only cost me 2500? Cause these stupid things and there plastic costs to much. A small low side will total your bike. Take the money and pay it off. Now the bike is your and you now only pay $35 in insurance. Just my .02.

But ya stick to open areas away from traffic. Even better get a 600 dirt bike and practice the basics in clutch/gas/brake/ and leaning. Drop a dirt bike- who cares pick it up and go again.

I do sometimes, too...
It's pretty fun. I only do it in a few places I know well. And like I said, I'm not very good at it.

I figure I can't be at the track 100% of the time, I may as well have a little fun on the streets, too.

thats why you mount a truck horn to your bike and blair it for a good 10 seconds while proceeding to give them the finger

When leaning in a turn, look where you WANT to go not where your heading. (have seen many newbies fall victim to this)

This is soooo true.

Always look through the turn and not directly in front of you.
I know this sounds kind of weird, but trust me.....You want to of any situations well ahead of you and not have a tunnel vision of what's directly in front of you

Just start off slow and get comfortable with being on a bike
Always ride within your limits and within your comfort zone
Trust me, the more you ride the more experience you will obtain

Good Luck
