: can we talk Atkins for a min?
hard_leanin_hank 02-16-2004, 03:00 AM I am currently in the second day of the induction phase of the Atkins diet. I currently weigh 180 and I am 5'9. I am doing it to maintain a healthier lifestyle more or less. Not necessarily to lose weight. I am experiencing headaches at this point. Probably because I am limiting my carb intake to just 20g a day and there is no more sugar in my diet, where as before....I cannot begin to imagine the amount of sugar and carbs that I consumed. I mean shit, I used to eat a thing of Ben & Jerry's Ice cream before I went to bed....along with soda....geeezz....I don't even want to think about it.
Well I am pretty much miserable right now and I need some support. I know that in the long run, it will pay off and I will get through the withdrawl phase. Thanks guys.
ryu750 02-16-2004, 03:02 AM Dont bother with the atkins.. Its only a short time fix.. UNLESS you plan to live this way for the rest of your life....!!!!? due to the fact that you are cutting out carbs.. if you introduce them agian .. you will gain the weight back plus more
SECOND this should be moved to the Health and Fitness forum!

61ache 02-16-2004, 04:14 AM Don't listen to the nay sayers. I'm about 7 weeks into Atkins, and it does work. Trust me bro you'll feel right as rain in a couple more days. You're body is going through sugar withdrawls, and yes you can be addicted to carbs. It usually takes about 72 hours for most of the carbs to get out of your system, and you'll get headaches for about 4 days or so. After that though, bam you'll feel great, and I mean great. You'll never be hungry, and usually have to remind yourself to eat. Tons of energy, its great. Just keep on keeping on, and don't let the headaches get to you. Oh by the way, get ready for the bar, cause you'll be one cheap date. I usually stick to low carb drinks like diet coke and rum or whiskey. After about 2-3 drinks you'll be plastered. Its funny how low your tolerance gets. With no sugars and easy carbs in your diet your body immediately starts metabolizing the alchol, so its like taking about 3-4 shots in a row when you drink a mixed drink.
It works but not in the way most people think.
It works by providing a palatable way for dieters to reduce their calorie intake.
It does this in two was;
A) It reduces or eliminates carbs and thus removes 99.97% of all Americans foods stuffs (processed crap, etc., Think about it what can YOU buy that doesn't contain carbs?).
B) Protein and fat foods make you feel fuller faster.
But this is still apparently too hard for people and now you can find Atkins approved
cakes, pasta, bread, etc.. (the profit taking is in, the principal is out.)
mtmra70 02-16-2004, 05:57 AM as far as the sugar thing, anyone that drops sugar experiences the headaches. My fiance quit drinking pop every day and she had headaches for like a week or 2....just pull through it. You would experience this atkins or not http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

oldgixxer 02-16-2004, 07:36 AM Atkins again huh?
Hey SicShift, how many times have we talked about this bro????Damn....
Well anyway, good luck gixxermaster. You will experience weight loss in the beginning with Atkins, but in the long run(like the rest of your life)you will never be able to sustain eating this way,and will have to try a new route.
If you plan on leaning out to show off your 6-pack of ab's,well it ain't gonna happen with Atkins. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Just ask Spidey,he'll tell you first hand how much it helped him.....

Too fucking many. I've written multiple pages of reasons why it doesn't work proven in practice and in science at least a dozen times. I'm done with it unless we were to write something up and make a sticky of it.
People just don't understand that just because you lost weight really fast and it's been a few weeks or a few months or even a year that it works and that it's perfectly healthy.
I still haven't seen one person that's for it that actually had a body composition analysis before and after. gee, do you think water and lean body mass loss just might be a factor? http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Of course, it could also be from the bone density deterioration from lack of vital nutrients due to cutting a large portion of our natural diet out. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif
Everyones always looking for the easy way, the get rich quick way regardless of it's long-term effect on your body. If being in great shape was easy, everyone would look great.
But then again, we all know what happens to most get rich quick schemes.

That happened to me, when I started eating right. I stopped drinking any kind of soda, and had minor headaches off and on for about a week. I probably only had 5 cups of soda in the bes 2 years or less, no all I drink is water, unsweet ice tea, and juice.
Motorscooter 02-16-2004, 09:09 PM Some like it, some dont. I think most people with eating disorders need structure and Atkins provides that. If your in for the lifetime thing, good luck because I think thats like saying im never gonna wackit again and like thats ever NOT gonna happen http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
So I am using it to get where I want to be, then ease back into a normal eating diet. Im on week 11 and I have lost 32lbs and still put on some muscle. Working out 2X a day will do that.
Anyway, good luck and don't worry about the headachs, they should only last a week. Keep pushing water and make sure your getting enough sleep!
machman 02-17-2004, 01:48 AM I can't believe people buy into this crap. If you want to lose weight simply take in less calories than you do now, or burn more calories than you do now through exercise. Hell you could even do both at the same time! THIS IS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE PEOPLE ! ! ! Your body needs a variety of nutrients that come from a variety of foods INCLUDING CARBOHYDRATES. Eat everything in moderation, exercise regularly and you WILL lose weight, and you WILL be healthy.
If you follow the Atkins diet, you WILL lose weight, but you WILL NOT be healthy, and you will not be able to follow the diet for the rest of your life.
We are the most overweight nations in the world and it's all because we want a quick fix. We want a quick and easy burger, we want a quick and easy weight loss method, we want a quick an easy way to make money. If you tell someone that by eating a healthy, balanced diet and exercising for 1/2 hour 4 times per week will result in an average weight loss of 1-2 pounds per week, it's not enough. Even though they are likely to keep the weight off and be healthier, it's not enough. People want something drastic like 4-5 pounds per week, which is totally unsustainable.
Take the leanest people out there, bodybuilders, they diet hard and lose crazy amounts of weight in very short periods of time. Even they can't maintain that leanness for more than a few days. As soon as they start eating regular meals they balloon up again. If you're not preparing for a bodybuilding contest, what's the point of this weight loss method? You won't be able to stay lean for very long at all.
This is yet another case where the tortouse wins the race. Take your time, eat healthy balanced meals, and exercise regularly. You will live longer, feel better, look better, and be happier.

Great response http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
On a side note, bodybuilders won't even use the Atkins diet. When the Atkins first became mainstream back in '90 a few N.P.C. pro's tried this preparing for a major $$$ contest.Needless to say they did not win,nor did they even place. One I beleive was in such terrible shape he bailed out and decided not to even step onstage http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
