lul seriously?

rather then thinking, reacting accordingly, and then breathing a sigh of relief these morons call 911... don't listen to the operator, and then die in a crash.

Regardless of the victims the gene pool once again shows us the weak.

Handbrake, kill the ignition?

Kill ignition, put ignition in "on" position, Step on brake, Come to a stop on the side of the road.

the big N works as well. then you would probably blow your motor before you could get the thing stopped. But then you don't kill your kids and wife:hammer

Unless your brakes are completely worn out that can stop you from a full acceleration too.

That is absolutely retarded. Just goes to show how many complete MORONS are in cars everyday.

Lets keep the mats, and weed out the fucking morons.

WOT at 120, with a fairly decent amount of HP, I can see where the brakes might not work well, but they should still slow the car some.

But turn the damn thing to "on" but kill the motor..... or neutral FFS :blink

The brakes arent very effective if the car is WOT because the brake assist is run off of vacuum and vacuum gets pretty low if you really mash on the go pedal. Just something to remember :biggrin

You would not believe the phone calls coming in today from people about this. What do we do, me and my family are scared to drive our car? I think I need to trade this car in? My car was just there a week ago and how come this wasn't taken care of?

AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!

Maybe if people wouldn't drive with their floor mat bunched the hell up to the front of the pedals this wouldn't happen....

vent over

Turn the fucking car off!!!! The people were obviously well off and accomplished enough to afford a lexus and support a family but could not figure out how to turn off a car? Darwin would be smiling. The drivers stupidity cost all four of them their lives.

so i want to say this was a new car where no key was in the ignition, it had a push start button...

brakes didnt work and the intersection appears to be a T...

on the news they said if u hold the push start button down for 3 seconds the car turns off... dont know about u guys but i wasnt aware of that...

lastly, some of you guys are pretty harsh for a family that just died... in the moment is different than at home watching on youtube... and of course you are all professional race car drivers with 50+ years of experience... i dont know the level of experience of the driver...

people died... chill out

the driver was a cop

"California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Saylor, 45, and three others
were killed Aug. 28 on State Route 125 in Santee, a town near San
Diego. The runaway car was doing more than 120 mph when it hit a sport
utility vehicle, launched off an embankment, rolled several times and
burst into flames"

TURN THE CAR OFF! yeah good idea guys... no breaks and no power steering at 120mph!!! you really expect things to end differently then? seriously guys!! some of you are not any more intelligent than the guy who called 911. Put the fucking car in N hell even P STAND ON THOSE FUCKING BREAKS until they catch fire if you have too. or better yet, realize the fucking floor matt is wadded up under your feet and fix it before you drive off. honestly how can you not tell that the matt is holding the peddle down? Its happen to me. you know what I did?? I fucking looked down to see what was the problem was. The parents should have died. why? BECAUSE THATS THE FUCKING PRICE YOU PAY FOR BEING STUPID! AND TAKE YOUR TWO STUPID KIDS WITH YOU. they are not going to help our society

Their are lots of stupid people in the world, Nothing can fix stupid !!!!! Put the car in neutral.. Motor may or may not even blow up. Even with the engine off you can still steer and stop the car. I expect we will be seeing more of this as more cars drive by wire with no mechanical connections

I sold Toyotas for all those model years. Want to know WHY the mat slid forward? The customers did not replace the black hook(s) that held the mats in place after the customer would remove them for cleaning. It sucks the people in the Lexus died, however, REPLACE THE BLACK HOOK AND MAYBE YOU WON"T DIE.

cars they do not have power steering do not have a power booster ran off of vacuum to circulate fluid. (engine off= no vacuum.) your almost better off grabbing the tire with both hands and trying to steer the car. Go put your newer car in N and without starting it turn the wheel. IT is not EASY. Its alot harder to turn than a car without power steering to start with. :hammer

Of all the dumb fuckers you rate highest. you do not lose brakes (not breaks) they are just a whole lot harder to operate. Same with power steering but when you are going straight you don't need power assist anyway.
As you obviously have never heard of anti lock brakes. He did stomp the pedal to the floor and the anti lock breaks did what they were supposed to do, they pulsed without locking the wheels until the brakes burned out. The parking brake is weak at best and once the brakes have toasted don;t work at all. This was a loaner car so he obviously did not know you had to hold the button for 3 seconds to turn it off. Why didn't he put it in neutral? I don't know. several reports said the new electronics and interlocks don't allow it. you'd have to ask a lexus owner

We all just know if it had been us we would have saved the day and walked away. It's easy to sit here and go over all the things we could do. Not so easy at 120 mph with the end of the freeway rolling up. I hope you know more about your bike than you do about cars.

there still had to have been something that he could have done. Run it up alongside a jersey barrier on the side of the road, put it in neutral if you can, shut the car off if you are able to, run into the back of another car if you must. Or just look down and see that the floor mat is bunched up. In any case, there is no reason that people had to die as a result of this. Fuck it, if all else fails, prepare everyone else in the car and grab a bunch of e-brake and spin that bitch. If it rolls, at least you will slow down.

I am not familiar enough with the new systems to say if any proactive efforts would have helped avoid this. Maybe the car has a safety system that wont allow it to go into neutral, perhaps it cant be shut off while in gear, I dont know. I bet that he could have downshifted into first though, manumatic style. It would have fucked the car, but who cares.

That stretch or highway has no barriers like that, Just steep canyons and hills along the freeway till it ends at a T intersection and is downhill the last mile or so. maybe If he hadn't clipped the other vehicle he could had ended up in the dry river bed and survived.
As for the floor mat theory, I have had the floor mat get up on the gas pedal and I just reached down and pulled it back.
Personally, if automakers are going to start making everything fly by wire like they are now, I'd like a kill switch like on the bike. Millions of people fly airbus airliners which are fly by wire and computer controlled. Most people don't know on one of the early (if not the first test flight) of the airbus the computer decided what it wanted to do (land) when the pilot was actually trying to get airborne. The computer won and the plane crashed in the woods killing the crew.
The cars on the drawing board now are all fly by wire including steering. That means each steerable wheel has it's own motor and processor tied into a computer that monitor everything that is going on. What happens when the motor fails or there is an electrical problem.... Just keep thinking about that airbus

That is good info about that stretch of road. I dont know it, I was just throwing ideas out there.

I agree, fly by wire vehicles should have some sort of kill switch in the event that something goes haywire. It could even be mounted under one of those red flip up covers for safety.

So with these new systems, there is no direct link between the steering wheel and the actual system? That just doesnt seem safe to me at all. What happens when a wire wiggles loose or a fuse blows at 80mph? :wacko

Tires go to full lock turn, and the car does circles to come back to you, kinda like the oldschool jetskis did :lol

There is fly by wire throttle, but if there is fly by wire steering(which IS NOT ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING) it is news to me.

Someone claimed it was "in the works" :dunno. I have never heard of it either :dunno. I cant fathom them completely taking out a direct link to either the steering, or the brakes, of some sort.

Next thing you know they won't let us blow stough up to get around.

Have to use sockets.

Already in the works of the next OBD having GPS capabilities.

They'll know where ALL cars are, at all times. Integrate with the whole system that makes the thing run.

But either way I cannot seeing that working at all...because when power steering fails, it is still steering, same with brakes.

There has to be a manual back up plan, because mechanical things fail. Period.
