: adding thickness
soysauce021 01-29-2004, 05:54 PM I've noticed that I've been getting a lot wider but not as thick as I'd like to be in my chest and back areas. My chest and back workouts go as follows:
Chest day
--DB or BB -- I try and mix it up every couple weeks
bench press (flat and incline) sometimes add in declines
flyes (incline and flat)
partial reps on hammer machines or cable crossovers to finish it off.
Back Day
seated, T bar, machine, bent-over, and DB rows (3 excercises chosen per back workout)
pull down to front, pull down to back, close grip pull downs, pull down on hammer machines (2 per time)
I usually do four sets with a 10-8-8-6 rep count.
BTW just cracked the 200LB mark, which has been my goal since I started last year. When I started last year I was about 170-175. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif
oldgixxer 01-30-2004, 12:09 AM If you want thickness, you need to really up the weight, and drop the reps bro, while keeping form somewhat strict like always. Here is what I did for adding thckness in both areas:
Chest:
-flat bench:4-6 reps,w/ a few forced reps each set.5sets
-incline bench:same as above,5 sets.
-dumbell press:same as above,5 sets
-incline dumbell press:same as a bove,5 sets
Thats it.No finishing movements like flyes, crossovers, peck deck, etc.Heavy, basic movements taken to the limit.
Back:
-widegrip pulldowns:4-6 reps, few forced reps each set taken to failure.4 sets.
-v-bar pulldown:same as above.4 sets.
-behind neck pulldowns:same as above,4 sets.
-t-bar rows:same as above,4 sets
bent-over rows:same as above,4 sets
-1 arm dumbell rows:same as above,4 sets.
Again, note lack of finishing movements. It is my belief that you need to add mass BEFORE you start to sculpt and refine it..this requires heavy compound movements available only with free weights.
Yes,thats 20 sets for chest, and 24 sets for back. But thats what I needed to do in order to add thickness to MY frame.Everyone is different, try it,modify it,tailor it to your needs.I'm sure your diet is tight, right?Good luck.

yah no shit... i did my 4 sets of flat bench.. 4 sets of incline.. hit my tris then tried to grab some db's and do some flat bench, picked up the 90s, knocked out 4 reps no probelm then the 5th i went dead.. even dropped weight couldnt muster anything past 4 reps.. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wtf.gif
soysauce021 01-30-2004, 03:58 AM thanks oldgix....words from the old wise one.
IM sure you know just working out doesnt mean your gonna add size?? You need to eat right and everything in order for that to happen..
My suggestions would be.(if you can do them)
weighted dips! (love them excellent)
weighted chin ups and pullups
IMO you are doing to many pulldown variations.
Ive had great success in the last 3months doing
Heavy deadlifst 3x6
wieghted dips 3xfail
weighted pullups 2-3xfail
weighted chinups 1-2xfail
bent over BB rows 3x8
I do a 3 day split that I posted in the "post your split" page if interested in other excersizes that I do.
But have had great sucess in my back in the past 3 months while bulking..
2ndgixer 02-02-2004, 07:57 PM Back when I was lifting heavy, I noticed gains (re. thickness) AFTER I got a bit better at squats and deadlifts. I had been reading a lot of body building mags, books, and talking to powerlifters at my gym. There is an old addage in this game, "Squats are king". Oldgixxer, am I right? Of course, I never attained the size or physique of oldgixxer, but I went from 155lb. to 217lbs. (@5-9") in 10 years with little body fat. I owe it all to the basic lifts; squats, deadlifts, flat bench, military press, rows, tricep extensions, and good ol barbell curls. I believe it was deadlifts which shocked my body and put some "depth" and thickness in my back.
Squats, deadlifts, flat bench press are considered to be the best or staple of a routine.. They are compound movements and seem to be the best for adding mass. I sometimes see military press in that group as well.

Drivenfaster 02-05-2004, 08:34 AM Sup guys, im 19 and I have been lifting for 7 months now. When i started I weighed 150lbs and was benching about 155. Now I weigh just over 200 and bench 315. So obviously I am a lot thicker. What I did was LOW rep, like 6 max. Definatly switch up the routine every few weeks, and always do a few reps past muscle failure with some one spotting you. For instance, ill lay down to do 245 on flat bech, i pump out 6 reps then have my friend help me do 3 more. Even though im not really doing them, it helps tear down the muscle more, which is your goal in working out. After you tear down the muscle you let it rest for a week, getting 8+ hrs of sleep a day. So I only do chest once a week, as well as the other muscle groups. And dont forget to do legs hard, doing legs increases your testosterone levels naturally to help the rest of your muscles get bigger. THen dont forget about your diet. I eat a healthy serving of 4000 calories a day. i get about 200g of protien and load up with carbs. It wont make you fat, well it dint make me fat anyways, I have 7.5% body fat so... And of course, everyones body is different so you have to manipulte peoples advice sometimes to make it work good for yourself.

And yea, no supplements, all i do is eat like mother. I was thinkn bout doin some creatin with NO2 in a few months, but i dont know...
CHiPZ 02-05-2004, 11:50 AM As far as chest I'm still trying to figure out what I need to do the thickin my chest.
For back I started with chin ups for warm up.
Pulldown (close, wide)
Seated rows (V-bar, reverse)
Bent DB rows
Lat pulldown
And if I had a partner that would last more than a month I could get bigger, but I really don't like messing with people at the gym while they're doing workouts (even though most won't mind). So whatever heavy lifting I do, I use the smith machine - but it's not the same as having a spotter there to help with forced reps.
And oldgixxer you're pretty knowledgeable, I hope you don't mind if I have questions to ask down the road on what I need and should change lifting & diet wise.

Guess I mis-read. Sorry soysause/1quik didn't mean to sound like a dick or anything just trying to make sence of what you said. You guys know the in's and out's of the body so I won't argue but 5 #'s seems so little. What about those guys that claim to put on many pounds in a year? Is that all collected in BF?
soysauce021 02-05-2004, 05:33 PM Hey bostitch, no harm done. And that info about 4-5lbs a year is totally wrong. 4-5lbs in a month or two yes. And its not all BF, if you're working out and eating right.
oldgixxer 02-05-2004, 10:58 PM Ok guys, just chill a minute and listen to the FACTS PLEASE!!!
-This is a well known fact everyone. If you train NATURALLY,you will be LUCKY to add 10lbs. of PURE MUSCLE a year. That slows down considerably the longer you've been training. I.E-if you train for 10 yrs, your not going to gain 100lbs. of muscle over that period. If that was the case we would have people walking around weighing 500lbs. ripped and ready to compete in the Olympia. The obvious exception to that rule is perfect genetics guys.Thats why there are Ronnie Colemans,Kevin Levrone's and Arnold's out there. But they are few and far between. And their not natural if you didn't already know that.
-water weight(in the muscles) will indeed make you stronger,if you've ever taken Creatine then you can attest to that fact as well.It will also make you appear smooth and bloated.
And 3rd of all,but most importantly I am a little disapointed in this post. There is absolutely no reason for fucking name calling or mocking anyone. How many of you have ever had the knowledge, insight, dedication and above all the quality muscle that is needed to step onstage and compete successfully in a BodyBuilding contest??????How many????Well, two people in this thread have, and one of them happens to be 1qwik6?.
Drivenfaster, your welcome to participate in these conversations bro.But since your new here, maybe you didn't know that that's not how things go in this forum.I've been doing this for over 15yrs.,I pride myself on knowing just a little bit about this stuff. When someone steps in my Gym and makes a statement about how they train naturally, never taken any supplements or AAS and have gained 50lbs. of mass in 7 months and are holding 7.5%bf I know better then to believe that.So does 1qwik6?Hey,if you have, good for you. You'll be next to Ronnie Coleman in 2 yrs.at the Mr.O
I have my opinion about that and it's different then yours.Thats fine.I'm entitled to it,as are you. Were adults here, and you have the distinct honor of being the first guy to start shit in this Forum since it's inception. There's still no reason to talk shit, cause the person your directing it towards(1slow6?,the retard you referred to) would mop your ass all over the stage if you stepped up to compete against him.
Yeah,I'm pissed and really don't feel like posting .

come on now guys we are all just messin around on here.
I was just playin about calln him 1slow6, thats why i put that smily fu after it...
As far as my gains go, whatever, dont believe me. I will post some pics when I get a hold of my friends digital camera. At the end of summer 03 I began working out. About mid July or so, that would be 7 months if im not mistaken. I wieghed 150-155lbs. I was a skronnny little kid. Now I weigh 200 +/- a few from day to day in my boxers. I do not take any supplements what so ever, except for prtoein additives. I do eat around 4k cal a day and I do have under 8% BF.
Sorry If I came out a little rude or whatever in my older posts, I was just playin around!!
And of course I respect you guys who have been liftin for so long, especially you guys who are/were competting. Thats tough stuff to get into to.
Oldgixxer, I dont know about that 10lb of muscle/yr thing though. I am honest to god that im not sittin here bullshittin you guys for a good time. I really have gained 40-50 lbs in 7 months. So i dunno...
Bostitch 02-06-2004, 02:05 AM If you don't mind me asking drivenfaster how do you measure your BF? Calipers?
Drivenfaster 02-06-2004, 02:11 AM I usually measure 3 times with calipers, and take the average. Well, I have someone else do it,but... Then I tried this hand held unit last week that my boss (Owner of our local gym, hes huge http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif) bought. Its this 100 dollar thing you put your hands on and I imagine it measures some kind of electric resistance through your hands to give you a figure. I did it just to see and its actualy not far off from the caliper reading I got.
YESSSS, here you go old gixxer, i got a picture of that bane guy I was talkin about. See the resemblence you two have http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif That thing on his left arm you can turn up to make his muscles bigger though... wish we all had one of those

Sup guys, im 19 and I have been lifting for 7 months now.
Where are those pics? Are you doing this WITHOUT drugs??? The ony gains like that I've ever heard of were from a former member of my gym who became a Mr. Teen USA and a neighbor's nephew who bulked up to play college ball. Both used anabolic steroids. Their gains disappeared shortly after usage stopped. I lift (14 years) at a hardcore gym known for it's drug free powerlifting teams and amateur body builders. I've never seen gains such as you describe from natural body builders. No offense intended...
Drivenfaster 02-06-2004, 02:04 PM theyre comin theyre comin... i dont have a digital camera, my friend has one ill get that shortly
and yes i am 100% clean, not even creatine. If theres any way to prove that I am clean let me know, ill do it
STRAFINGIXXER 02-08-2004, 07:25 AM are ther any NATURAL bodybuilders?people who appear to lose after coming off a cycle usually were doing a high androgen like test.you hold a ton of water.if you take something bodybuilders use to cut for a show like winstrol v. you don't hold excessive amounts of water.but the secret is just eating alot, training hard, and DON'T over train.on the natural side of things there are alot of supplements out there that work real good.try cel-tec to start.read ,read,read......

This must be your typical 6'-0",110lb. dude who can barely bench his bodyweight hiding behind a computer screen, your jealousy of me is the ultimate compliment any man could give another, short of a blow-job http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gifLiver is fine,no Gyno here,Oldgixxer is just a "little little" smarter then that... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Cup size, well just a bit bigger then your Mom's,not quite as big as your Gramma's,just a little firmer then your sister's,but not as succulent as your girls http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/spit.gif
fah-q-honda 02-11-2004, 09:57 AM I'm just f'n with you dude! Kinda bored at work. I just hate all those f'ers that walk around running there mouths, "yeah, I'm 240 25" arms, I worked really hard to get these" and you know damn well that they're juicing!!! Maybe I'm just a little pissed cause I'm not as ripped doing it naturally. I just seen the pics of your arm in another post, looking good http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif From what I can see it looks like you're doing the natural way!!! What's your fat%? Are you more of a power lifter? I agree with what's his face about the shirt. Oh yeah,I'm up to 115 now!!
bmfgsxr 02-11-2004, 11:38 AM fahq. its not the smartest thing to go around accusing people of something like that. especially people you dont know. and no body likes a wise ass. so do us a favor and if you like hanging around do a little thinking before you type.
fah-q-honda 02-11-2004, 12:02 PM You're saying no one has a sense of humor in this "forum". You're right, I don't know him and I don't know you. Why would you take anything that someone types on the internet personal anyway? What the deal-e-o. Why would I want to sit here and fight with someone on a feak'n forum, It was a jok http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/piss.gife Forums are a good place to get info, but if you're going take stuff personal you should probably get out a little!!!
bmfgsxr 02-11-2004, 12:22 PM its all good if its a joke dude, but sometimes you have to get to know the people your joking with first. we dont know you yet and dont know how to take you. and there is no getting out in the middle of winter. so we are forced to be insane, and cranky.. at least i am. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
soysauce021 02-11-2004, 05:33 PM damn what happened to my post??? I just wanted some info on how to get thicker dammit, and all this BS comes up http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
oldgixxer thanks for the help, workouts feel a lot better doing the workout you PM'ed me. I will definately have to turn to you for more advice. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
