I have been looking around for some titanium chunks to make a few odd pcs but have a few questions. Anyone here ever do any machining on this stuff? What grade should i be looking for(small turned pcs and small milled pcs) ? I have machined lots of 316 and 304 stainless. I have also done quite a bit of turning on hardend pcs. And have machinined a boatload of aluminum, uhmw, delrin, steel, nylon, but have never tried titanium. Any special tooling or will your good old carbide work? Thanks much guys(and ladies)

about 15 years ago I han to grin a Ti bottom backet on an angle grinder to take off a very small bur, it wore out the grinding wheel.

Carbide tools, and take it real slow, because ti tends to wrap around bits... I was fortunate to play with some ti in H.S., plus i'm a ti fanatic - even wear a titanium wedding band.

as a general rule, this is how we do it..about 2/3 rpm of 410 stainless.LOTS of coolant, slow feed and use a insert with no chip breaker!! your tools will last a lot longer if they have no rake(-or+) have fun go slow mike http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/punk.gif
