okay, i have a desktop and a laptop, and i share my connection to both of them, i just unplug my cable modem from one or the other and switch to the other, my problem is that when connected to my desktop my connection is plenty fast, it recieved well over 70 packets in under 20 seconds, however when i plug in my laptop it took 2 and half minutes to recieve 70 packets, any help would be appreciated.

What OS do you have on both Computers? Are they the same OS?

IF so, what is the Hardware on both systems? An Old say P11 300 with 98 on it will be slower than say a newer system, with XP or 2000 on it. Although 70 Packets in 2 and a half min seems like a problem.

If you have another Network Card, perhaps swap it out. Also, look into getting a small router/Switch, instead of unplugging your Inet connection.

--Edit--

If the Lappy is say 98 or something, you may just need to reboot it, or release and renew your IP to get it going faster. Its worth a shot.

What is "likely" happening, is that your Cable modem Records your MAC address (Unique Hardware Address, Burned into your NIC) and when you swap From one to the other, the cable modem is confused as it is trying to Send to the Other systems MAC that no longer is connected.

If you are going to continue sharing your internet this way, reboot your PC everytime you swap, or release and renew your IP, so that the cable modem, knows what MAC it needs to send to.

To release and renew, drop to a Dos Prompt and type 'ipconfig /release' and to renew its 'ipconfig /renew'

If you just plug the PC in the network and wait to see how long it takes to recieve 70 packets without doing anything, then that's not a good benchmark. You really need to try and stress your network connection. Try doing a speed test like this one http://www.dslreports.com/stest It will tell you more accurately just how fast you're able to transfer files on the internet.

Edit: Maybe I'm a bit confused by your question. Are you referring to the time it takes for the pc to sync with the dsl service. Or are you talking about actual network throughput?

why don't you get a hub and just put 2 lines in this way they each have there own internet connections?

A Simple hub will not work. He needs a Router.

yeah, i need a router. i have looked into it several times in the past year, just have alway's found a better way to spend my money. this problem just started in the last few day's and i've been doing this for atleast a year and haven't had any problems. i use the 2 computers for 2 different things. my laptop is more for fun things since it has a bigger harddrive (40 gigs) and my desktop only has 7 gigs.
