I think when you say "colt .45" you're referring to Colt's 1911 pistols. Any gun based off of John Browning's original .45 caliber M1911 design is referred to by gun aficionados as a "1911" regardless of whatever caliber its chambered for (you can get them in 9mm, .40, 38 Super, 10mm, even .50 GI, as well as the original .45). Many manufacturers make guns that are basically clones of the 1911 design including Colt, Springfield Armory, Kimber, S & W, and so on and they are all generically referred to as "1911s" the same way Windows personal computers are all called PCs whether they're made by Dell, IBM, Asus, or so on.

If you talk about a "colt .45" bullet though, that's more confusing though since there is a ".45 Colt" for revolvers and a ".45 Automatic Colt Pistol (ACP) for pistols and submachine guns.

As ogie said "colt .45" can refer to a "long colt" or a revolver round, or a ".45 acp" which is for a semi auto pistol......... traditionally.

You are refering to a "1911" style pistol, which can be had by any manufacturer really just about. It is a style of pistol in how it functions...... not a brand or model really.
