I got a questions for the techie types.
I want to set up a full personal (not for profit) web presence. I'm talking my own domain name, web site, and email. The whole domain part is easy. I already got one set up at home. My questions is this, how do I proceed to make myself "net known"?

there are programs out there that add your name to the search engines, but it's easy to do yourself. There's usually a link at the bottom of the engines to add your site. Just make sure you have good META tags on your site.

Yup just look at the bottom of the search engines, after lots of links you will be able to add your url into a box then they will send a spider into the site to find search words. Takes a couple months to get into the search's but it works!

Google will crawl it. Read their site. They give the exact info on what you need to do to have google crawl your site more. Also, a lot of search engines use googles API, so submitting to them is redundent.

Adding meta tags to a page is almost obsolete now. People used to just add thousands of keywords in their meta tags, in an attempt to boost their rank, so most search engines use other methods now. The best way to get out there is to have other sites link to your site. This is how Google PageRank works. It looks at how many sites link to your site, how many sites link the site that links yours, etc... and ranks you accordingly. Don't buy into those BS autosubmitter programs, they won't help you much at all.

Not entirely true, it still looks at the Meta Tag, the first 8 words, it also looks at the title, and makes sure there are matching words on the web page as in the title.
Click Here to make a meta tag (http://vancouver-webpages.com/META/mk-metas.html)
That will help you.
