Anything you guys think I should know/do before taking my Arizona CCW class this weekend? It's my first CCW class so I want to make sure I get it right.

I've been preparing for it by doing a lot of reading including The Gun Digest Book of Concealed Carry, and Combat Handgunnery by Mas Ayoob together with various magazines - I also plan on picking up the the Arizona Gun Owners Guide and reading that too. I've also been doing a lot of range time with both my XDm .40 and P99 9mm and feel confident I can easily do the qualification with either one. Doing a bunch of dry-fire and airsoft drills too.

So anything else I should do besides making sure I listen and learn at the actual course?

See if you can meet with or talk to the actual instructor before hand to get an idea of what the course will consist of and what you will need to be prepared for the class.

I'm not sure about AZ but here in Michigan so long as you pay for the class, show up (and don't shoot anybody) you'll pass...seriously. I'm speaking of the actual CPL/CCW class which in my opinion is/was a joke (kind of like getting a driver's license I guess.)

So basically, if you are legally eligible to get one here in MI, there's no reason why you won't. It's probably roughly the same everywhere. :dunno

Here is KY we had to spend so much time watching video on law, regulations, etc. After that we had to actually be able to identify parts of the weapon, and also break it down, clean it, put it back together.

This was after the range time which consisted of hitting the target so many times out of 20. All were single shot, raising the weapon prior to firing and then lowering it again after the shot.

That's here in Kentucky though. IIRC some states just have you fill out an application.

That's how it should be if you asked me (and then some.) In my class, the guy next to me had a huge revolver (.357 or .44) and he never fired a gun in his life. He went through the first 5-6 rounds @ 3 yards...3 yards! and I looked over at his target and not a single hole could be found. By the end of the day, it wasn't much better but he still pased. Everybody passed regardless of their performance. The only thing our class was good for was the legal discussion with an attorney and a local chief of police.

The short version I got was that here in Arizona you have to attend the one-day class and do a range test where you have to get 70% of 10 shots (5 at 5 yards, 5 at 10) into the box of a TQ15 silhouette target in order to qualify for a CCW. I just want to be as ready as I can be :biggrin

ya htey figure if you dont die by boredom and can wait out the class, you arent going to run and murder someone. most of it is common sense, dont open fire into crowded intersections, take responsiblity and know that if you do shoot its going to be a major headache so make it worth it...shoot to kill

shoot to kill

You're 'shooting to stop the threat'--as many times as necessary.

Tell the 911 operator/police/prosecutor/jury that you were "shooting to kill" and they'll have a field day with ya. ;)
