How to change your spark plugs

This is a relatively easy maintenance procedure for even the most timid Gixxer owner to do! It will save you money and give you knowledge of your bikes workings.
With its wide main frame spars the GSXR (especially) the SRADS make it a very easy and quick job! I estimate the time from 10-30 minutes depending on your level of knowledge over the bike and tools needed.

Tools needed (all in your tool kit)
Allen wrench set ( for seat and tank front)
Spark Plug wrench
Open end or adjustable wrench (to turn sparkplug wrench)
Tank prop rod or similar (some way to hold the tank up)
Clean rag ( to wipe stuff clean)

First thing you need to do is remove your driver seat, two allen screws secure it. Next undo the two allen bolts holding down the front of your fuel tank.

You can now prop the tank up from the front, it is nicely supplied with a rear hinge. Put the supplied prop rod in one of the tanks allen bolt holes, and the other end in your triple clamp hole in the center of the large nut.

With your tank lifted you can now remove your airbox. Your airbox has three hoses hooked to it. One in the front, one in the rear, and one on the side. Unhook each, it should be a simple tug on them or squeeze the small wire clamps. Next unscrew the four large rubber boot clamps that hold the airbox onto the carbs (on the bottom of the airbox). Don’t remove the screw, just get them loose!
You should now be able to lift the airbox out of the bike. Make sure to lift, “UP” and off the carbs. It is really pretty obvious what hose goes to what inlet on the airbox from its routed location, but if you have doubt, label them and anything else!

I suggest you cover your carbs with a towel. Just to keep dirt or anything from landing on or in them.

Now you can see your cylinder head of the motor, and the four plug coils in a row from left to right. Wipe this area clean!

Get all the major dirt and grime. Now, simply pull upward on each of the rubber plug caps with the built in coil. Pull them all out. Don’t worry they are numbered. 1,2,3,4 from left to right. Inside each hole is a sparkplug. Put your sparkplug wrench down inside the hole. With another wrench, turn the sparkplug wrench until the plug is loose and you can twist it out by hand.

Once the plug is unthreaded, pull out the sparkplug wrench, it will hold the plug and pull it out for you. Do the same to all four plugs.

I suggest you remove one plug and replace it right away before moving on to the next. Just to keep dirt from falling in the hole. When you install the new plug, put a small dab of grease on the threads, and twist it finger tight first making sure not to cross thread. Next snug it with the wrench. Don’t over do it, but give it a solid firm twist. When you push the coils back on take note to have the coil wire coupler aligned how it was when your removed it. You don’t want it to be touching the metal valve cover if possible. Draw a diagram before you remove them if you can’t remember.

And that is really it! While the airbox is out, open the top and clean your air filter!

Few things to remember;
Check the gap on your sparkplugs before you put them in.
Before you restart the bike, visually inspect and mentallly retrace your tracks.....did you hook everything thing back up?

Would this be similar for an 04 gixxer 600. My 04 is fuel injected. What are these instructions for?
