: Need help getting a system recovery disk for a Compaq
I have a Compaq Presario desktop model 5014US (WindowsME... ewe) and Best Buy says they have to have it to repair my computer with my service plan. I searched the Compaq (now HP) website and can't find it. Any ideas?
Thanks.
hammerdown 01-12-2004, 03:19 AM Are you looking to save any of the data on the machine or would you like to wipe the drive clean and go to another OS. If so I have a few compaq restore cd's and a few win2000 cd's that I could send to you. .. let me know. . http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
I already had Win2k on it.. but I could care less about info on it as I have been using a new computer for quite some time now. They told me I need the actual recovery disk before they can do anything with it.
SilverAthlon 01-12-2004, 07:38 AM you don't "need" the restore cd, it's just handy when it comes to re-installing an OS because it has all of the drivers for their integrated hardware. Good ol best buy, they could do it if they wanted to. If it's not important, just format the drive, and then re-install whatever operating system. I have every OS made by Microsoft, so if you need something... You may end up with some unknown devices, but with the recent merge between companies, it'll be hard to get anything compaq out of them I would guess. Considering it's hard already.
If you're not that computer smart, maybe you've got a friend? Otherwise I could walk you through a win2k Install probably.
Ratman69 01-12-2004, 07:53 AM I looked through the site too and couldn't find shit. Try calling their support line.

I know they don't need it and I already told them that. I have Win XP Pro.. but he said it has to be an actual copy and they couldn't load any type of 'back-up'. I do know computers so that isn't the problem here. The OSes you have.. are any original discs? I really don't care about OS as I'm going to warranty this bitch out anyways.
JonRags 01-12-2004, 08:52 AM I got one by calling the support line for two of the systems I have at home.

Did they charge you?
JonRags 01-12-2004, 09:01 AM They were going to since the PCs weren't purchased by me, but they never did.

Holy shit... how long was your holdtime?
They're telling me I need to buy a quickrestore CD because the free system recovery disk they can send me will not bring my system back to the way it was when I bought it. This seems like shit to me. I asked if they computer came with the disk I needed to return my computer back to day one if it crashed and she said 'no' and when I asked her if that made any sense, she said that she didn't know she just sold the disk.
This is the first time I have ever heard of the computer not coming with the right disk to recover the core files/OS. So, if it did, then the free disk she is telling me she could send me should have been the same one it came with and the same one I need.
Anyone?

It was a long time. I think it was on a Saturday so I turned the speaker phone on and went around and did things in the apartment.
SilverAthlon 01-12-2004, 04:35 PM yeah I have original cd's to all... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif they aren't easy to get from microsoft for free though. I have OEM and Retail, but not 1 of each for each OS.

I guess $10 isn't bad to just get the recovery disk from Compaq isn't that bad. I just thought I could get by with just the recovery disk. I don't understand how the quick restore disk is $10 more and what the difference is.
gottspeed 01-31-2004, 08:07 AM God my head is boiling from when i used to be on the other side of those compaq/hp tech support calls.
If your OOW youre buggerd. Buy new recovery cds, im pretty sure they still have the ability to charge it to your credit card.
Other than that, go burn a copy of windows and go on the net for some drivers. Its bound to be the easiest solution.
