: RF600 ran, then died, now won't start! Help!

I purchased a 94 RF600 with 11k miles last Wednesday night. The tank was empty so I topped it off before heading home. It was pouring rain and I made the 20 mile ride home without a hitch. Parked it in the garage and went to bed.

Two days later, Friday evening, I go to start the bike and it fires right up. I then pull the choke to warm it up. The RPM's surge to about 4k RPM then drop back down to about 1k and the bike sounded really rough. Weird, I thought the choke was supposed to raise and hold the RPM's. I twist the throttle and it stalls. Start it back up, do the same procedure and it happens again. After the 3rd or 4th time the bike fails to start up again.

The engine turns over. It sounds like it has good compression. It was never blowing smoke. I verified fuel pressure from the pump, replaced the plugs, verified spark, checked battery power - still wouldn't start.

Yesterday I pulled the carbs, drained the bowls, sprayed them out with intake cleaner and reassembled. No dice.

At this point I'm really low on nerves with this bike. I want to ride soooooo bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

How long did the bike sit with the tank nearly empty? You could have moisture/debris issues. Was there anything in the bowls? I recommend you start with a fresh tank of gas as your fill-up may have disloged something.

Sounds like you're using the choke wrong, and/or the bike may be tuned too rich. You generally only need the choke for starting, and you want to back out of it as soon as possible. Choke after starting is usually not required in warm weather OR if the bike starts without choke. It also depends on the type of "choke." Most are enrichening circuits that actually add fuel rather than restrict airflow to cause more fuel to be drawn from the bowls. That kind of "choke" is most effective at starting in cold weather, but it's also very easy to flood a bike with one particuarly if the bike is tuned a little too rich.

After swapping out the gas, make sure the battery is fully charged and try to start it without choke and WFO throttle. Give it about 15 seconds of cranking. Try starting with no choke and zero throttle. Try starting with partial choke and no throttle, etc.

If you're getting fuel to the bowls and spark, it's likely just a mixture issue.

Good luck.

I have a 95 rf600 with around 17k on her and last summer I hade the same thing.. Went for a ride one day and the next time I tried to get it started, no dice.. I took bowls off and cleaned the same thing and still no fire.. Tried a second puelpump, nothing. I then took the carbs off and completely tore them down, I ended up having varnish, baby food looking buildup in the screens above the floats.. I would reccomend taking the carbs off and doing a full teardown.. Doesnt take any $$ just some carb cleaner and maybe a small brush.. I used torce tip cleaners to ake sure the jets were clean.. (had some debris in a couple of them...) Since then the bike has ran better than the day I bought it.. Hope this might help and solve your problem..
