: Good reason to continuously check your carry weapon
kdj67f 05-09-2009, 09:06 PM Got a couple of boxes of ammo out of the safe and went to my mothers house to do a little shooting and to deliver some mothers day flowers. Now my mom lives out in BFE, well past neighbors five miles down a logging road.
Any way, My carry piece is a glock 19 and I decided it was a good time to go do some practice shooting. I loaded some of my cheaper 115g FMJ ammo, and could not knock a beer can off a log at 50 feet. I could always knock a beer can at 50 feet before with the same pistol and ammo. I loaded my mags with my carry ammo and it shot the same: shitty.
I ended up painting the log I was shooting at to track where I was shooting and it was almost twelve inches to the left. Now this is not at a range bench shooting, this was just freehand shooting for practice. But ferfuxake, WTF happened?
I ended up pushing the rear sight to the right of the slide until it was flush with the edge of the slide. And it shot consistently like that all day. So it looks like a full disassembly is going to happen to see what is loose. Visually it all looked fine, it just mysteriously started shooting weird.
Looks like I am going to have to carry my Glock 20 for a while.
Always shoot your carry weapon!
ogiedoki 05-11-2009, 10:30 AM I don't have a carry weapon (yet, since I'm still working on getting a CCW) but that's a good point that's applicable to any self-defense firearm even if it stays at home.
I don't think you'd don't want your big shtf moment to be the time to find out your gun isn't feeding right, isn't shooting straight, or otherwise has a problem.

You act like thats a bad thing. I love my 10mm glock. 16 rounds of full load 10mm. :yumyum Use 135 grain bullets for less potential of over penetration. Massive amount of knock down also, at about 760 ft lbs of energy.
Duff8402 05-11-2009, 04:33 PM Just shot my carry weapon (S&W M&P .40) for the first time in a few months last weekend. Somethin' was pretty funny with it too...just couldn't seem to get a good grouping
Changed the trigger finger and next higher assembly and it put 10 shots through a 3 inch radius.
Guess I need to hit the range more often :lol I've always been good with rifles and shotguns, but I just can't group a handgun for shit
d7k8gsxr600 05-11-2009, 04:52 PM ^^ my dad just got a m&p pro 9, and we just went to see where it hits and it was all over the place as well just straight out of the box it shot all over the paper, not just 12 to the right or left, but all over.
i cant cc in Il which sucks, but i like shooting my glock 17 that has some extras done to it! :biggrin
kdj67f 05-12-2009, 10:18 AM The only problem with my 20 is it doesnt quite fit on me the same as my 19. More like an open carry weapon :D Could not find anything wrong with the little glock, it just wants to shoot like it does for some reason. I wanted some better sights anyway, so i might just order some and get everything all lined back up. Thankfully all of my guns have come out of the safe shooting just like I remember them to except my carry pistol. I think I may have damaged the cheap plastic factory sights on the glock. It probably got roughed up riding in the center console of my truck or something.
And carrying the 20 is a good thing, I like that gun! but all the ammo I have is all 180gr JHP. It was a good deal on ammo so I bought 500 rounds of it :D
If it's a carry weapon look into XS Sights. They're great battle sights and I plan to throw some on one of my G26's.

I carry my 20 in the winter with a sweatshirt and the Blackhawk Serpa Holster when I feel like it. If I want, I carry it in a Galco Summer Comfort IWB holster during summer for concealment, but it is a little on the heavy side for that. Otherwise, its an XD or one of the XDMs I like to carry.
kdj67f 05-13-2009, 01:09 AM I am so slender and wear fairly well fitting clothes so I have to try to conceal a compact pistol. Usually I wear a carhartt jacket every single day so that helps. :D
I am thinking of getting my girl a pink mini glock to carry in her purse for black tie affairs :thumbup
Avengingromance 05-22-2009, 02:21 AM i have a question for the op do you regularly clean ur glock even if you dont shoot it that often my friend owns one and i used to as well they do some wierd things every now and again

The guns do some weird things?:scratch
You should be able to throw that gun in a puddle of muddy water and will still shoot. What weird things are you talking about?

No. I clean mine after shooting at the range but the amount of 'cleaning' a Glock requires is nill. Use a Hope's Bore Snake to pull through the bbl a couple of times looking inside with each pull for carbon deposits inside. Then use a stiff bristle brush to clean the outside of the bbl and the bottom of the slide and the outside where the cases eject. Clean up the frame paying attention to the slide tangs and the trigger area (again, just the brush.... all dry) and finally a drop of oil on the bbl where the wear marks are from where it makes contact with the slide and smear it around a little with your finger. Then a drop of oil on each of the four slide tangs, replace the slide and hand cycle a few times. Use a rag to wipe the excess oil at the back of the slide where it contacts the frame and you're done. That's it. Anything more is overkill.

You're in Arizona so you can "open carry" legally if you had to.
dja3137 06-05-2009, 06:27 AM you guys carry while riding?!?
maybe its just me, living in a low key neighborhood, cus i have a CCW, but rarely carry
russgsxr 06-05-2009, 07:41 AM If you have a ccw you should carry whenever and wherever it is legal to do so. If you ever need your weapon(I sincerely hope you do not) you will not be able to predict the day and time. So carry all the time.:cheers
