I have an 86 750 that I am building for 100% track service.

I have a set of carbs from an 87(34mm) but I was thinking that I wanted something bigger/better.

I have been pointed towards 38mm carbs from a slingshot or 36mm carbs from 1100s or 1200 Bandits (97-00)...

What carbs are on what years and what would give me the best performance possibilities without going the flatside route.

I LOVE my 36mm B-12 carbs. I have a set of 40's, but will not put them on I like these so much...

Depends on what track you are riding 36's for a tight track 38s for open tracks. You can get more TQ with the 36's better drive off most corners.

I should have probably said that I am using 88 cams - Intake lobe height of 33.88 and exhaust lobe height of 33.50 and a fully ported 86/87 head with stock valves. I havent decided on a compression level yet, but its going to be at least a little higher than stock. Plus B12 exhaust.

I noticed that FactoryPro has a kit for 38mm Powerjet carbs for the 86/87s.

Would 38mms with the power jet work without an airbox?

heck, i have no clue... I set these up 2 yrs ago when i finished the bike. I REALLY do not remember, and i cant find the original jet kit around anywhere either.... I know i fiddled with them for 3wks to get them to run better than any of the EFI bikes I have ridden. It will start and run all the way down to about 24 -26 deg, and runs good all summer long too.

Can the 38s be set up to run decently on my bike? The only carbs I have been able to find are 38s for $150 and 36s for $300. I would rather get the 38s and spend the time making them work.

YES, you can use them without an airbox. The power jet wont do anything. They can be a PITA to tune, but it can work. That 91 GSXR, with the 165hp 1216, i sold had 38's on it with Pods. It ran great.
