: standard vs. underseat exhaust

I've always been a fan of the underseat exhaust (916, show bikes, etc) but since no stock bikes came with them, they always seemed like a show thing. But, now that stock bikes are coming out with them left and right (R1, 600RR, 1000RR) the standard cans just look like they drag the back end of the bike down. With all the new-gen tails pointed at the sky it just looks stupid.

Since most guys dont use anywhere near the max potential of their bikes and that small HP and handling differences between brands are nearly indistinguishable by the average rider, the decision of which bike often comes down to styling and brand rep.

When the cost of an underseat exhaust will cost abotu $1500, it just makes sense that you would get a bike that already has it included in the purchase price. As much as i hate to say it, and feel like a posing-fruit, but for my $9-10k styling is more of a factor than a 3 or 4 hp edge.

never been a really big fan of undertail exhaust. And when I think undertail exhaust, I have always thought Ducati, I think the japanese maufacturers should have left it that way....but that is just my $.02 http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

I think that underseat exhausts definitely look a lot cleaner than standard mounted ones. However the only time I think that a manufacture should put on an underseat exhaust is if they are also putting on a single-sided swingarm, because in my opinion that's one of the best looking combinations. One is useless without the other(stylisticly of course).

I personally don't like the undertail exhaust for the simple reason of availibility. There are only a few manufactures that will spend the R&D time and money to make a good undertail system, especially a full system. I don't want to choose from two or three makes. I hope Suzuki doesn't come to this.

The best looking bike right now is the new R1. The undertail exhaust looks slick as hell on that bike.

I've only been a fan of Ducati's underset exhaust. I think the Japanese mfg's have a ways to go before they perfect the style of it. But then again I'm more into the simple clean look.

Agree with morrisr. The Ducs are the best looking undertail exhausts. But the standard Duc cans look better than the standard Jap cans, so that might contribute as to why the Jap undertail exhausts do not look as good.

My vote is against undertail. I'm happy with how the gixxers are currently.

When I lowsided my bike on the right side on a slow speed crash I was wishing I had an under tail exhaust because my stock can got dinged up and scratched. I think you would have less drag with an undertail exhaust. If Suzuki could make one that looks as nice as the new R1 I am all for it but if it would look anything like the 600RR's exhaust then I will stick with the conventional side mounted exhaust.

personally.. I think the only bikes that the under-the-seat exhaust looks good on are made by Ducati... but that's just me http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Eh, I'd say the aprilia's look tight with the underseat exhaust, and some of the custom ones the guys have here... I guess it mainly depends on the bike, not too keene on the new R1's styling with it, but it's all preference of the rider / buyer...

Everyone thinks Ducati started the underseat exhaust thing with the 916 but it was actually Yamaha way back in 1990 with the TZR250 Reverse Cylinder. The 04 R1 is merely a copy of their original design, i.e. twin underseat exit pipes, underside braced swinging arm.

I know the TZR had the under seat pipes for different reasons (rear straight exhaust to improve gas flow) but the styling of that 14 year old bike is still looks good today.

someone talked bout resurrecting a thread...thought it'd b fun to resurrect this one...seeing as lots of bikes in the past couple of years went w/ the undertail after this thread was created...and have since went to the shorty...

Feeling nostalgic? lol. Im glad suzuki steered clear of them. They may look good but imo just a passing fad.

In my oppinion, lower c of g is going to end up winning, and putting the exhaust high up under the tail is not going to help that at all.

Considering the fact that bikes now have to have cats, which are still under the motor even on models with undertail exhausts, its probably a moot point.

is it against the law to remove cats in texas? i'm in the houston area as well. Eventually I'm going with a full exhaust.

Technically its against the law ANYWHERE to remove emissions equipment from a motorvehicle that came with it stock. Will you fail inspection if you do in Houston? No.

Im torn on this subject, as i like my RS3 pipe my OCD i think it is kicks in and i like the look of a symmetric bike...and im not talking like the busa with dual pipes cuz that just looks terrible. just my $.02 but im seriously rethinking my exhaust but not sure what to do..shorty or just something similar....got plenty of time tho as we school boys dont have too much flow.

I think of all the undertails from Japan the Honda CBR's look cleanest. The R1's is nice also but none look as clean as the Honda's.

I love the sound and performance of my Akrapovic full ti systme with oval can. But on a K6 it looks kinda dated. My bike as going to be a shop bike but now its mine but will still promote the shop. So I'm thinking of an exhaust thats more for looks. The Akra will just find its home on the track bike.

Under-tail exhaust also helps fill the aerodynamic void behind the bike. It's minimal, but it is a factor.
