: Gun cleaning......

This ought to get interesting. Everyone has their own way, and "this product rules, your product is crap" story.

For one, am I the only person here the LIKES the smell of gun solvents, grease, and actually likes to clean them :blink. Almost therapeutic :lol

I use hopes 9 for the bores. WD40 for a solvent to hose it down (or spray rem oil.... depends on what i have on hand) a drop of Rem oil here and there for assembly lube on certain parts, and Hopes gun grease on slides and such.

What do you use?

Same as you other than the WD-40

Depends on what it is.

Handguns CLP to clean, Weapons shield (From FP10 designer) for lube

smaller rifles or bolt/lever/pump actions same as above

Large semi's = CLP to clean, Grease to lube

Ha, I am old cuss, WD40 wasn't out when I was shooting.!! :)

When I was cleaning, it was universal Hoppes #9.. However, lately I found out, I didn't need all that.. And started using I think it was AndersonOil.. I used that as a cleaner and lubricant too. Just like with the bikes, the guns weren't getting but so dirty. Unless I got caught in a shooting match in the rain..

Since I used cast bullets lead bullets all the time, sometimes I would run across some leading, and would have to use a wire brush.

All in all, usally a good oil and wipe it down. Ditto for the bores too. Jacketed bullets might need a little more...

Rem oil on everything.

Bore snake at the range.

Hoppes, CLP and WD-40. I love the small of hoppes. I've been known to wear it as cologne. :lol

I use the WD40 just to carry the powder residue out. Much cheaper and easier than using hopes.

I hose everything down with WD40 as I take the firearm apart. That gets most of the dust off. Then I use hopes inside the bore with patches to clean out the bore. Then dry patches to finish off the bore.

Then Rem Oil on the outside of the barrel and a drop here and there on the mechanical parts.

Dab of Hoppes grease on the barrel pivot, hammer slide interface, and on the slides of the frame (for semi auto handguns)

rifles I dont use the grease much at all. Just hose down with WD, Hoppes 9 for the barrel, and clean it up. Drop of oil in a few spots.

Break-Free CLP here as well - it's free at work :biggrin Other than that Hoppes No 9 once in a blue moon when I feel one of the bores needs a deep cleaning :)

On a side note - when I was in the Big Sandbox, using oil wasn't too optimal - attracted too much dust and fine sand. Instead I left my guns completely dry and used the graphite powder supplied to lube the Beta C-Mag 100-shot mags. The mags themselves are absolutely shite once it starts getting hot and dirty but the graphite powder is great :cool A couple of times I've fired 1000+ shots through my C8 (M4) without cleaning in between, lubed only with that graphite without a single jam :cool

weapon shield smells like cinnamon, lithium grease does not :lol

Grease is so messy and imo, not necessary. My SKS had a SHITLOAD of grease in it. As long as you clean and lube it after every outing, it will be just as good.

You sure that was not Cosmoline left in it :dunno.

Grease on the slides, and on the hammer interface on a lot of semi auto pistols is recommended by most everything I have ever read., as oil will not stay put, and it helps prevent galling :dunno

I dont use grease on the SKS though, just oil.

Alot of gun owners are resorting to using Mobile 1 motor oil, as they say it performs BETTER than grease by seeping into areas grease cannot get to, and it doesnt dry up. Cleaner.:dunno I personally have never used grease, I use synthetic oil. A drop on each slide groove, and a couple others. But I have nothing against those who use grease, just never needed it myself.

I wonder how they apply motor oil :dunno.

My oil is in an eye dropper type bottle, so that over oiling does not happen. And for grease I break a Q-tip in half, and just dap a bit of grease in three spots on each side of the gun so that when I rack the slide it is spread across the entire slide. Then I take it back down one time, and wipe excess off, and put it back together. :dunno

I feel like it stays put there better, Doesnt leak out onto the outside of the gun, and doesnt attract too much crap :dunno

I think a lot of people over oil their guns. Or over grease them.

I wipe off all excess so that it is jsut a film where I want it, weather it be grease or oil.

Break-free CLP and Powder Blast here. The PB has a nice citrus smell, lol. I've never used any grease.

I just let everything soak in the CLP. I may try mineral spirits if I can find some for a good price as the PB is kind of harsh to plastic.

VERY large amount of people do this. ONE drop in each side of the slide is plenty. Ive seen some MESSY guns:dissapointed

CLP does it all. I'm still using the same 4oz bottle of CLP I bought when I went into the academy 3 years ago.

As a bore cleaner, Hoppes yellow label is Ok, but Shooter's Choice is far better.

Glocks, Sig and HK pistols need light lube like Tetra oil, TW-25B or MiliTec-1. Less is more.
Lube, slide rails, outside of fwd bbl or bbl bushing, bbl hood, top of hammer if equipped. (bearing edge)

1911 pistols, light grease on slide rails, light oils everywhere else. see above.

AR's : 1st choice MiliTec-1, second Tetra, oils only, NEVER grease AR's, especially in dusty climes

I've always wondered about using wd40 to clean. I've been using a hoppes kit, but I am considering just using CLP. I have a xdm 9mm and that thing is a DREAM to clean. That is compared to a SnW 22lr that doesn't come apart so therefore does not get cleaned but once every 5k rounds. lol. 22's are champs thoughl.

Turbo, let me see a pic of your 22 lr?

If it is like ours it DOES come apart, and pretty easy at that :thumbup. But it doesnt have a take down lever. You need an empty shell to take it down

Where is moto joe to inform me how to takedown that stupid .22? lol

Moto_Joe
02-26-2009, 06:24 AM
Sorry. Alright, pull the slide back, and you will see a pin on the front of the slide where the shell eject sortof. put something in front of that (an empty shell works) and let the slide forward so the shell hits that pin and the front of the frame. That will free up that narrow piece on top of the slide. Might have to fidget with it a little. Pull that piece out, and that releases the slide and you can then pull it off....... I dont remember anything more than that.

Let me know. It has been awhile since I cleaned one of those :D

alright joe i'll give that a try. my dad said there was a special tool that came with it that pulls that pin and keeps the slide in place or something. too confusing to take down! lol i'll try it out and let ya know.

use hoppes or really any barrel cleaner. copper brush down about 4-5 times then wet patch then dry patches until its comes out clean. lube with rem oil on trigger and light oil on the bolt. Outside of gun gets light coat of oil wipe it down then use silicon cloth to get rid of all finger prints and any oil that hasnt seaped into the pours and back on the rack.

for the 300 after a box I will use copper remover(cant rember the name) put a wet patch throw for however long it says and use a stainless brush . then dry patches until there is no more blue or green i cant remeber. copper build alot of people dont really pay attention to but if you can see a organge tint on your rifling your probably overdue

I hate when i'm switching between ammo and i can see which is the dirtier(sp) of the bunch. I don't mind a lil more powder residue or anything but i hate when there is chunks of metal or copper in my chamber. dam shitty ammo!!
