I've got a ported match grade barrel in my 9mm Beretta Vertec and am wondering if it's safe to fire +P rounds through it? the barrel is made by EFK fire dragon. Does anyone have one of these and know if +P rounds are OK? I only ask because a friend of mine sold his 9mm and has a ton of +P rounds he's gonna sell me at a good price.

Let's say the barrel is deigned for it, are there any side effects of +P ammo such as damaged rifling, decreased accuracy, etc?

Its not the barrel that you need to worry about with hot rounds, its the frame of the gun. The Beretta is a nice gun, and I'm sure you will be fine.

Thanks V2 i did not know that. I've had a frame saver on it for a while now so I'll be picking up some +P ammo next weekend :punk

Well here is my personnel experience with the Berreta & +P. When the Marine Corps started phasing in the M9's, they had an issue with the slides cracking as a result of firing subgun ammo (+P) rounds through them & ended up paying more $$$ to replace the slides. When I puchased my 92/96 combo, factory instructions specifically stated not to run +p or +P+ ammo.

Do you think a frame saver will make it OK?

The pistol is not designed nor engineered to handle the pressures of +p rounds for extended use. Give Beretta USA a call & they can try to explain it to you. As mentioned above it is not the barrel you need to worry so much about.

Thanks felix. The gun has a frame saver that keeps the slide from impacting the frame when it recoils. It's basically a dual spring system that replaces the stock guide rod and recoil spring. It get's really stiff right before the slide would normally impact the frame so it keeps it from doing so.

You're right though i'll give Beretta a call to be safe

I wouldn't use them constantly, but the occasional +p round shouldn't hurt it. I use +p rounds for my duty/carry rounds, but I don't practice with them very often, just enough to be sure that they act just like my practice rounds.

I would agree, it should be fine to run them once in a while, but you mentioned you were getting a ton of +p from a friend. We need to define " a ton" I would not be putting a case of that stuff through a Beretta, but please give them a call & have your ser# ready in case they made changes, so you will know for your pistol.

By the way, SAAMI pressure ratings for the 9mm are 35,000 PSI for standard and 38,500 for +P

Good luck

thanks Felix. i emailed Beretta and am waiting for a response. The ammo i'm looking to buy is about 500 rounds of handloads made to +P spec (forget what mfg round was copied). For $75 it's a steal and the ammo will be fired at the range because I can't even buy bulk ammo this cheap and have no purpose for a 500rd stash of +P ammo
