So I am looking to pick up my first hand gun. I don't want something too big, just something that I can go shooting with.......also, my wife wants to come shooting with me. SO I want something that will not knock a 105lb women on her ass.

We are new to gun purchases/ownership. We have shot guns before, but never our own

thanks :cheers

9mm is a great round and it's cheap to shoot too. Check out the typical Glock, Beretta, Springfield, Walther etc and see which feels the best. just stay away from a short barrel pistol because they're about as accurate as a slingshot

I love my Beretta...................I've put thousands of rounds through it and not 1 problem.

If you're not planning on carrying it, I'd say go for a full size 9mm. It will be a good home protection gun to boot. Try and find a range that rents out guns and give a few different ones a try to a few to see which one you two would prefer. Glock 17 & S&W M&P 9 are full size and not too awful big (I occasionally carry a Glock 17) or if you want something a little smaller maybe try the Glock 19 &/or S&W 9c. The recoil seems pretty manageable (my girlfriend shoots it with no issues.)

how about springfield guns. A gun nut that I work with keeps telling me about the springfield 9mm's.

We plan on going to a gun shop this weekend to try a few out

Get something that you both feel good with. Ergonomics & location of controls are an important factor. Keeping things (safties, decockers, slide catch, mag release, ect) in reach is always good. Become familiar & comfortable with them. 9mm is a good economical round with easy to shoot recoil, but for plinking & just good fun it's hard to beat a 22 unless you plan for self defense. Get quality, stay away from unheard or rarely heard of brands as the aftermarket support will be limited. shop together to get a feel for the weapon. Something with adjustable back straps like an M&P or a FNP might be in order.

:punk Any questions about a springfield XD, ask away. I ave had all of the XD models. These are my current 3 with my one Glock. If springfield made a 10mm, I woudnt have the Glock (not that its a bad gun, its superb, but I like he XD and XDM WAY more)

If your hand sizes are very different it might be an issue. A lot of women where I work have the Glock 19. Get something that doesn't cost a lot to shoot because if it costs too much you will probably shoot it a lot less

Another plus on an XDM springfield, you have three interchangeable back grips to accomodate any size hand:cheers

buy a sig or an hk....best guns money can buy. and for only an extra $100-150 it is worth it for the quality. buy a 9mm. cheap round to shoot, and won't break anyone's wrist. sig's and hk's make anyone shooting them look like an expert.

Clock 19 for you, Walther P22 for her FTMFW!

CLOCK:

A clock is an instrument used for indicating and maintaining the time and passage thereof. The word clock is derived ultimately (via Dutch, Northern French, and Medieval Latin) from the Celtic words clagan and clocca meaning "bell". For horologists and other specialists the term clock continues to mean exclusively a device with a striking mechanism for announcing intervals of time acoustically, by ringing a bell, a set of chimes, or a gong.[citation needed] A silent instrument lacking such a mechanism has traditionally been known as a timepiece.[1] In general usage today, however, a "clock" refers to any device for measuring and displaying the time which, unlike a watch, is not worn on the person.

When I taught NRA personal defense classes, this question came up all the time. My recommendation is to get a revolver made by a reputable company chambered in .357 and shoot .38 specials in it. A Ruger SP101 is an example...(see www.ruger-firearms.com)

Revolvers are cheaper than autos (typically), and much less complicated to operate. They also encourage proper shooting technique, since there is no recoiling slide for new shooters to fear.

There's several schools of thought on this, and right or wrong is really hard to determine.

Like starting on a 250 and still playing with it for the rest of your riding days, you could get a nice .22 and you'll probably treasure it forever.

My Ruger 22/45 is a pleasure to shoot, is similar to a 1911, doesn't break the bank to buy or shoot. I also love my Walther P22. One of my next guns will be a full size .22 revolver. It's great to have at least one .22 in the collection. When you get 500 rounds for $20, ya gotta love it.

The revolver isn't a bad choice at all because it's a practical gun, wether it's a .38 or a .357, with .357 being more versatile bcause it can shoot .357, .38, and .38+p.

A quality semi-auto isn't a bad choice either, ideally a full size for better handling manners on the range. You can get a compact or subcompact down the road for carry use.

So I recommend to buy a .22, rack up a bunch of range time while you decide on your next gun.

I just gave my gf a subcompact 9mm for carry/defense use, but she's already got alot of practice shooting my guns.

Awesome gun, truly awesome.. :thumbup..

Do the later models come with that full lug underneath or is that custom?

Even that 29 can be used by a beginner. I use to let me sons shot my 29 (6 1/2)barrel loaded with 44 special cases with 5 grains bulleye, and a 200 grain cast flat wadcutter.. With the weight of the 29, the recoil was just like shootin a 22 and you could see the bullets hit the target at 25 yards.

so I just went shooting with a few guns, the springfield XD subcompact, XD 4in barrel, and a glock (i think it was a 19)

And I must admit, the XD's have a nicer feel to them. I shot about 30 rounds on each gun. Although I am not a great shot yet, all my shots were grouped nicely.

I think that I am going to go with the XD subcompact (as I may want to carrY) So, what do you think of my selection? I really didn't see any difference in regular XD to the subcompact. I was only shooting at 10 yards.

also, I didn't shoot it , but I like the feel of the new (or so I'm told) XDM. Anyone have thoughts on these?

I have both XDM guns, and an XD, and a Glock. Of them, the most cofortable and accurate for me is the XDM. It comes with three back straps to choose from to accomodate what grip you want. At any rate, +1 on the XD. Here is a pic of the XDMs and xd and glock

Glock 19 is one of the most popular pieces out there... it's a great gun. It's cheap to shoot, easy to maintain, reliable and isn't too big to make her uncomfortable... plus its a great carry piece imo - you gotta go with what feels best... I hated the XD's I tried(thought about picking one up last year) and decided to stick with my glocks, and some people are just the opposite. The more comfortable you are with it the more confident youll be. It'd suck to be in the shit with a gun your not at one with... here's my 19

well, I like the feel of the XDm with the adjustable backing, but I didn't shoot it. the subcompact and the normal XD were exactly the same feel.
