: The rebirth and evolution of my GSXR continues...
StraightJacketRacing 11-30-2003, 03:53 AM I'm documenting my GSXRs restoration here (http://www.angelfire.com/az/angelking/gsxr750.html) if anyone cares to see. This was a bike (basketcase more like) I purchased from Ebay. The seller neglected to mention a few key items, like #1 It was a race bike. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif
#2 It had been crashed extensively. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bitchslap.gif
#3 It was a California model. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
#4 Didn't run worth a damn. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
Oh, well, she'll be exactly how I want her when she's done. I'm open to feedback and ideas-feel free to let me know what you think!
utp216 11-30-2003, 04:30 AM I really like the way you made the web page and all about your progress with rebuilding your bike. I wish I would of done something like that. I like that tail section your scored off ebay to! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Jason
Bobbychet 11-30-2003, 05:31 AM hey don't go too high on those 38mm carbs on e-bay, I've got a set and I'll make you (only)
a great deal! Let me know if you want them and thanks for the compliment! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
StraightJacketRacing 11-30-2003, 07:20 AM The complement was well deserved, Bobbychet!
I actually already won the carbs, but I appreciate the offer. Thanks, dude!
I'm actually trying to figure out how to proceed with the site-if I keep doing it like this, it's going to be one hella long page. I'm thinking about having a picture of my bike that would have different links on it. For example, if you wanted to see what I'd done on the front end, you could click on the wheel. However, I do like that it;s chronological right now, so I'm not sure...
Thanks for the input, guys!
GixxerRacer371 11-30-2003, 07:39 AM Really nice work!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Thanks for the kind words too! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Definitly go with the OEM airbox too.
I've got some scarry pics of my bike when I first got it..... I should post them up sometimes. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I wish I had the patience to do a webpage like you have!! Very nice job! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/applause.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/applause.gif
Bobbychet 11-30-2003, 09:15 AM Hey Straight! maybe it'll be as long as my 600 out 1100 in post! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif
Bobbychet 11-30-2003, 09:47 AM hey straight do you need an OEM airbox?
spongebob 11-30-2003, 10:59 AM dOOd, i used to have a 93/750, it was stolen in 94..anyway, i may have a sales booklet, and a motorcycle magazine with a road test..im sure i have the turn signals(2 each) and reflectors somewhere..
id be honored to give them to you if you need em.. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
gottspeed 12-01-2003, 12:42 AM Dude, could you scan the Sales Booket and Road Test for the 93 750?
Alternatively, Could you send them to me for that purpose? I want to make them available for everybody.
StraightJacketRacing 12-01-2003, 06:58 PM Spongebob,
Thanks for the offer! I actually have the signals and reflectors, but would love to have the sales booklet. I see that I'm not alone in that, however! If Gottspeed is going to make it available for everyone, that's a bit more noble than me sitting at home drooling over it and not sharing it with anyone. It was really cool of you to make the offer! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
GixxerRacer317,
Man, I would love to see some pics of your bike before you turned it into the Superbike that it is today - might help give me faith I can see my bike through!
As far as having patience to do the web page, well, it's actually pretty therapuetic to document the progress on the bike. Every time I stumble upon something new that has to be done, at least I can look at the page to remind myself how far I've already gone!
Bobbychet,
I've actually got the aribox, but thanks again, man! Do you have any idea if I can run the airbox-to-carb boots from the 36mm carbs on the 38mms? I've gotten the carb to cylinder boots already, but not the others.
Thanks guys!
Bobbychet 12-01-2003, 07:56 PM Straight ,
WhenI pulled my OEM airbox off and went to singles. It was a bitch to get it outta there in one piece. Fastcat was looking at the OEM airbox and pulled out 4 rubber air restrictors. I don't know for sure what they were for. Do a post about this question and Zook ,duckboy or 317 will answer it I bet! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

No, the carb to airbox boots are different diameters, and different vertical offsets. If you get me a red R, and pay for shipping, I'll send you the right ones.

Well I can't help here..... From the beginning of time it has been well known that the watercooled GSXR's just do not run properly on CV carbs without an airbox. To me there is nothing more frustrating than a bike that will not carburet right throughout the rev range.... it just takes the fun out of riding the bike in my opinion. So I've either run an OEM airbox on my bike or converted to Flatslides......

OK your webpage has inspired me to take all my pics and info and create a page similar to yours...... My internet provider has an easy do it yourself webpage creator for me to use along with 10 megs of page space. Gimme some time and I'll start one but I've got to go back all the way to 1997 when I started the bike project. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
Here are a few teaser shot of my 92' GSXR600 as it was when I bought it....... the bike was as stock as you could get too.

Here it is as a restored GSXR 600...... with a Yoshi race pipe, Airtech Race upper with Graves bracket and Piaa lights as well as a Fox Shock(the only mods to the bike as a 600). I rode the bike as a 600 for two years before the 600's lack of hp output had completely beat me down......

I replaced them..... Both lips were bent bad enough that they were not repairable. I had someone attempt to repair the rear but it cracked.
Glad you got the bra, hope you like it! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

StraightJacketRacing 12-03-2003, 07:19 AM Dan,
Whoa, now I don't feel quite so bad!
I think we're going to have to start a "Dear GixxerRacer317 column, since you have so many anwers!
I think it's really cool you are going to do a page as well-let me know if I can be of any asistance. Can't wait to see it!
By the way, how is the coolest Gixxer ever coming along? I'm going to have to ride out to your neck of the woods when both of our bikes are done to get some pictures.
Maybe I'll buy a domain name like www.wreckstoracebikes.com (http://www.wreckstoracebikes.com), and put `em up there.
Anyone else restored an old GSXR?

Bobbychet 12-03-2003, 09:12 AM Hey guys makes me envious, I should've captured more pics of my bikes evolution too!
My bike was stolen and recovered after the theif got tired it it and left on the side of the road. Shit the wrecking yard didn't even want it! The wrecking yard traced the owner of the bike by what was left of the VIN number. (yeah he even punched all the locks too!) :The color of the bike when I got it was Krylon white with "roller" touch ups. The crack head that stole it didn't even take the time to pull the parts before his "paint" to try to diguise the bike. Hence I'm continuing to remove overspray. The only one to atest to this monstrosity is Fastcat which I gave her my old plastics and she sold them on e-bay. I'm still to this day totally confused on what this guy was thinking on trying to change the looks of the bike because it stuck out like a sore thumb! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
msthtd 12-03-2003, 09:47 AM hey guys....
as soon as i get all these problems out of the way that i'm having right now.....i took pics of the bike since my head blew...(see thread...DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY????)...that will give you the history of the bike since '02 may.....stages of complete tear down...upgrades and repolishing.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif

Greg,
How are you going to support the front of the fairing without the headlight? Your stock headlight IS the bracket. Sounds like you need a yosh or a graves bracket...

http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/brace0.jpg
This is what my front end looked like before I wrecked it. The headlight is from a buell and doesn't attach to the fairing. I made a bracket from the light to the bracket that holds the guages. Then I cleaned up all the wiring you see in the second picture.
thanks,
Greg
StraightJacketRacing 12-04-2003, 10:27 AM You wrecked it????????
Are you okay?
How bad is the bike?
dude, that was one of the cleanest mods I've ever seen...
96gsxr1100 12-04-2003, 11:33 AM I was riding with a fairly new rider two weeks ago and we were merging on to traffic. Two roads merging into one like a " Y ". He was in front and I thought that we was getting on it to get in so I looked over my shoulder to see where I was going to get in. When I turned my head back around I seen him stopped right in the middle of the road. I nailed the front brake and did a stoppie which threw me into the back of his BMW cruiser. My bike never hit his bike but it went all the way over and crushed the front fairing and then fell to the side. Beleive it or not the bike is not that bad. I need a new front fairing, brake lever, foot peg, bar end and wind screen. As for me I'm just a little sore in the neck and back but I did pick up the bike and ride it home 70 miles. Actually some lady helped me pick up my bike. That was some crazy shit!!!
The new mods will be even sicker. I have a few ideas. One of my ideas is to mold lights into the air ram holes. We'll see.
Greg
Bobbychet 12-04-2003, 12:51 PM 96GSXR1100,
glad to hear your'e ok I've some plastics if you need some but that'll just put more weight back on your bike. That Buell headlight install was "the shit" You didn't hurt his Bmer too bad I hope.let us know if you need some things and I'll see what "extras" I have ok?

StraightJacketRacing 12-08-2003, 09:16 PM No, just haven't had any time (or $$$) to do anything on the bike. I left for work at 8am yesterday, and got back home at 8:45pm-and that's about par for the course lately. The upside is, if business keeps going this well all month, I'll have a fat commision check to spend (partly) on the bike!

I was laid off a year ago last Sept..... I was lucky to be able to step over to a competitor as the lead designer with just a week off (a mini vacation).... it was the best thing that's happened to me to be honest! I actually like what I do again and I'm making more money..... plus it was like rubbing salt in an open wound when the place that let me go found out I was working for their competitors.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Well when I left there I made them a promise...... that they would regret it! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif
Bobbychet 12-09-2003, 07:39 AM yeah I'm trying to go to a competitior too it's a longer drive (50 miles) and the pay isn't as
good but I had an interview and it seemed to go well I had some kowledge that they were interested in and am willing to bring my old customers over to the new company as well. That along with being a disabled vet and they won't have to pay for my health insurance since VA is my primary care provider makes me feel "useful" to them. I'm just waiting for that call. Hey I won some LED bulbs for my clear tail light! That brightens up my day! (no pun intended). 317Dan and Kingston what's your next venture on your mods?

Well my #1 priority is to finish my engine which will happen in January. After that I'm going to do something about my brake caliper situation.....
I've narrowed it down to the following choices...
PM 6 pot race calipers
Nissin 6 pot calipers
Brembo 4 pot calipers
The PM's are the easiest to mount and I've already got the PM disk to match...... otherwise I would lean towards the Nissin's because the people at PM are a bunch of idiots.... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
If all else fails I will go buy a cheap set of OEM 4 or 6 pot calipers and stick my set of OEM rotors back on the bike until I can find exactly what I want in the way of brakes.
I will be riding this thing in February/March one way or another!!
FastCat 12-09-2003, 09:52 AM If things work out for me in the next few weeks, I'm going to be looking to sell my `91 750 forks that are modified to fit an SRAD/TLR/`Busa style wheel/rotors. I haven't decided yet whether to keep the wheel, or sell it all as a unit - I'll know more after I take some more measurements...

http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif
The original plan was always to get new springs and valve-emulators in my `91 forks... but the more I read about UK_Lee's latest `fighter, the more I'm thinking that I need to put some R1 forks in those `91 triple-clamps.
Trouble is, even though I *think* all the other measurements line-up properly, the R1 uses 300mm rotors and I've got the 320mm rotors on the SRAD-wheel. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
The 4-pot Tokicos work *very* well with the larger SRAD rotors.
I *may* see about just modifying the R1 forks the same way I did with the `91 750 gix forks, but if I can find a wheel and rotors in my budget, then that would be a lot simpler... I don't need to worry about the speedo-drive either way because I went to a sigma as my only speedo when I first put the SRAD wheel in.
StraightJacketRacing 12-11-2003, 03:46 AM GixerRacer317,
I'm curious, did you have to modify your subframe for your SRAD-type tail section? I'm thinking about cutting mine down some, since I'm not going to carry any passergers. My goal is to drop at least 70Lbs. off of the bike.
I want to keep the alternator, but just about all the other street gear will be dropped or modded. I plan on doing the projector beam headlight setup, which should drop a fair chunk. I'll start adding titanium axles and bolts as time & money allow. I don't want to run magnesium wheels-potholes would give me heartattacks, but PM aluminum wheels seem might appealing!
Any advice, anyone?? What have you guys done to drop weight from the bike?

The SRAD style tail is made specifically for the watercooled GSXR 750 by AirTech, no modifying was needed other than to make an "L" type bracket to mount the tail to the sub frame.
I would like to modify a stock subframe to match the Yoshimura sub frame but I'm too lazy..... that would cut a couple of pounds off. When I'm done the only things mounted to my Subframe are going to be a battery box and a catch can.......
If you find a source for Ti axles let me know..... as far as I know no one makes them anymore. As far as Ti bolts..... it cost about $100 to do the front end of our bikes. That would be handlebars, T-Clamps top and bottom and pinch bolts. Since I've lost most of those bolts I'm gonna go ahead and replace them with Yoyodyne Ti Taper head allen bolts. I think those are the only Ti bolts I'm going to do for now.....
I'm not gonna make this a daily rider so I'm not really concerned about potholes as far as the Marvic Magnesiums are concerned..... If I do make it a daily ride then I definitly would consider buying a set of PM's. Marvic for this bike are nearly impossible to find so if anything happens to them I will have a cow!
On my bike if it had anything street related on it then it was removed and thrown away os sold on Ebay.... Anything that was aluminum and non load bearing was replaced with carbon fiber..... Anything that was steel was replaced with aluminum if at all possible. Bodywork / Carbon Kevlar......... Gas Tank / Aluminum........ Airbox / Fiberglass......Fairing bracket / Aluminum. If you really look the bike over good you can see lots of areas to remove weight. Last time I put the bike on a certified Scale it was at 417 lbs. with stock wheels on it.
Oh...... and I'm gonna get one of these soon......
http://www.gixxer.com/uploads/rgvfender.jpg
Damn thats a bad pic..... ok it was supposed to be the fender from the Airtech RGV kit. It's a copy of the fender that Yoshimura used on the 93-95 Superbike but made to fit the showa forks.......
GixxerRacer371 12-11-2003, 11:28 AM I just bid on some really trick calipers but I'm sure the ultra rich Ducati guys are going to outbid me on them......

Yeah it's around 100 lbs lighter than stock...... but it takes pretty drastic measures to get it to that point. You basically have to rethink how to put the bike together.... Completely re-engineer it.

msthtd 12-14-2003, 11:37 AM straight..
some from an 1100 and the 750....there was a little trick for getting the braced swingarm on without any resizing or buying something outrageous to make it fit.....pretty easy....took 30 secs....just as long as it saved me money..i was happy with it...all the other stuff was compatible...as you all know.....thx for the kind words http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
GixxerRacer371 12-14-2003, 01:53 PM Come tax time I will be getting another bike to use as a daily rider....... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif ( I finally talked the wife into it tonight) http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif It will most likely be an old Oil Cooled gixxer though but whatever I get will remain as close to stock as possible other than maybe a fox shock. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I'm currently eying a former race bike..... a very nice 89 GSXR750 with a freshly rebuilt 92 engine and all the mods I would want on a street bike. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif I just hope the guy doesn't sell it anytime soon!! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

um, so, yeah...
...when are you going to find the time to get the 1127 motor in that 750 if you wait until racing season starts to buy the bike?

It's a 907 not an 1127....... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif As far as having time to work on it well I'll make time. I just want something I can ride to work and back....... the 907 isn't something I want to ride daily for as long as my ride to work is.....
well I have an end of year bonus coming from work but I don't think it's going to cover the cost of the bike...... If I had a choice I would get the bike tomorrow but since I'm not made of money the bike will have to come when I have the money for it. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif timing never is perfect for me......
msthtd 12-14-2003, 04:43 PM 317...
it took me two jobs and six months to get all the toys i wanted to my bike.....looks like it's time to join the ranks and reap in the rewards of that unwanted second job http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/banana.gif
StraightJacketRacing 12-15-2003, 01:04 AM Oops! I meant to be more specific about what parts I was asking about...I meant to ask what bike the brake calipers came from, and if they were a direct bolt-on to the `93 fork lowers.
GixxerRacer371 12-15-2003, 01:08 AM Those are Tokico 6 pot calipers..... they are a direct bolt on to the 93 GSXR. If you want specifics about what bikes use these calipers then do a search in the Oil Cooled Forum.

msthtd 12-15-2003, 04:50 AM straight.....and.....bobby
i saw that same auction on ebay...it wasn't 317....it was someone else...but it was like an optical illusion cause i saw the high bidder name also....it looked like 317....but then again....oh yeah...i got those six pistons off a 99 750...i think..it's been so long...the only thing i knew is that the gold 1000 six pistons don't fit.....wasn't gonna try to make measurements and make a bracket for it either....plus the rotors are different thickness.....but boy if anyone out there has 1000 gold calipers on their old skool......let me know....cause i got a pair!!!

Y'know... if you disassemble those 6-pots and send the hollow bodies to performance-coatings to get cermachromed, they'd look *almost* as brilliant as those polished ones...
...and once you re-assemble them and get some good photos, I bet the y2k guys would trip all over each other to get to `em on eBay...
Bobbychet 12-15-2003, 01:47 PM Sorry 317 I thought it was you, http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif it was gixxerracer371. Shit he must live right next door to you ( Garland TX) got them for like $41.00 too!
GixxerRacer371 12-15-2003, 01:59 PM those were stock cams I was selling..... they had Yoshimura adjustable cam sprockets on them...
Bobbychet 12-15-2003, 02:37 PM So he said "yeah they were sold to me by my next door neighbor"
I should've figured! http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bitchslap.gif
msthtd 12-15-2003, 02:49 PM fastcat...
not a bad idea....but seems like alot of work...maybe if i was into showbikes and all..but.....to tell you the truth i haven't seen a 2k anything with polished calipers yet to date http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
StraightJacketRacing 12-17-2003, 12:38 PM Well, I found something I wanted for my GSXR. I had intended to do these mods to my top triple clamp, but, hey, someone did it for me!
New top triple clamp (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=10066&item=24 48859036)
I love the look of the black triple clamp! I don't know yet if it was powder coated or painted. I also have to figure out what I want to do where the ignition mount was ground off and the bare metal is showing through. Maybe I can find a tiny Yoshimura emblem to put on there. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif I do want the bike to be perfect, so if I absolutely can't make this part perfect, at least I can put it on the bike and have the same treatment done to the stock piece, but with the ignition mount ground off before the part is painted/powder coated.
I think I may pick up the Ti bolts for the clamps as well while I'm at it.
StraightJacketRacing 12-31-2003, 03:02 AM Woo-hoo! Progress continues on the beast. I just got my new coils & cables for the bike. Getting pretty darn close now.
Does anyone know off the top of their heads the internal diameter for the hose that connects the brake fluid reservoir to the master cylinder? I want to replace my hoses, but don't know what size I need. I need the info on the front and rear brakes.
Thanks, guys!
duckboy 12-31-2003, 03:26 AM Boy, for all that time and effort, you could get a real Yosh top clamp- they seem to show up every once in a while in the $150 range...
Bobbychet 01-05-2004, 12:07 PM Kingston here's some pics of my old tank eithier this one or Welshgixxers
there is one small wee dent right btween the lettering and the gas cap but is hard to see.

StraightJacketRacing 01-05-2004, 11:51 PM Well Bobbychet, you're right, that's in MUCH better shape than mine! Let me know if that one ends up being the one for sale-I'd definitely be interested in that tank. Woo-hoo - more progress!
