: SV1000S or 600cc Sportbike?

I am looking to upgrade from my '94 Katana 600 and I am trying to decide which is the best choice. I was looking at getting one of the new 600's, but I was just thinking that the SV1000S has a very similar HP/Weight ratio. Does this mean that The SV would be equally apropriate as a second bike or is it much to early to be looking at a liter bike V-Twin or not? I would aso consider the 650S because of the price and insurance but it actually has less power that my Katana. I guess what I really want to know is will the power of the 1000S hinder my ability to become a better rider and will it make as good of a track bike as that 650S?

Thanks

It will be a better track bike then the SV650S out of the box, but with some money invested in the suspension, the 650 is an awesome track toy. The 650 will actually make you a better rider as it will be a lot more forgiving then any of the supersports. On smaller tracks the SV will run lap times just about as fast because you will learn to carry more corner speed.

Just my opinion.

I totally agree with ya, you can hit the corners faster on a 650. And with alot more confidence. i think the Katana & SV650 are pretty much a equal match, if you are comparing power to weight ratio. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

So, would the SV1000S and a new 600cc be an equal jump up from the katana? Also has anyone that has ridden the 600RR felt like the hole in the midrange is a big problem. Most Reviews that I read on it say that the only complaint is the lack of power from about 7K to 10K rpm. This is the only thing that makes me not want to get this bike.

the sv1k pulls hard all the way to redline, there is a slight dip in the mid, but nothing a PC3 can't fix. i love my 1k, its got balls but yet its not as aggressive of riding so i can cruise if i want to. out of the box a 600 will stomp the shit out of an sv1k on a track. very close HP but the 600 is lighter and has a better suspension setup from the get go. however on a 0-60 the sv1k will beat a 600. if you want a dual purpose track and street, you will LOVE the sv650 and thats my recommendation.

I would go with the 600rr myself. The reviews mostly were pretty disappointed in the sv1000. Not as fun to ride as an SV650 they all seemed to say. I don't personally own one nor have I even riden one but you get much better suspention with the rr and a better engine in my oppinion. I think you'd have more fun on it. But what the hell do I know? haha.....

You are compareing assholes and old people! The sv1k is a totally different riding style than the 600RR,as in one is a twin and the other is a 4 banger. The 600RR is a replica racer(race bike with a tag)and it's not my opinion but the truth and the SV1k is an all-around bike:for going to work, the track, country roads, mountain roads and whatever else you want to do,these
are the bikes intended purposes'...The 600RR is made to ride, handle, and perform like a race bike, meant for a one-track kind of riding! As for the RR being a daily driver,it won't work. You'll get tired of pulling so many RPM's to get any power where as the SV has power(torque not HP)from around 2k to redline...no joke! The SV650 is pretty much the same execpt around 75lbs lighter and better performance being that it is powerful and light(370lbs!!)I think the RR is around the same weight but you are still talking about two very different bikes,if you want the best all-around bike then get the SV650S,not the SV1K or the 600RR!Also insurance is very cheap on the 650 where as the insurance on the RR will be $1200+,I have heard that some people on here have insurance as low as $750/yearly,so it's pretty damn cheap!

you will get ass raped on insurance of a liter bike, they don't care if its v-twin or inline 4. i know http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif

True, but the only thing that counts on insurance is the bike manufacturer! My dad only pays 649/year for his BMW K1100RS!

ok i will give you the best comparison here. i am not sure if you have a preference already from the other guys but my buddy and i both bought new bikes this last june in new york . he bought a gsxr 600 03 brand new and i bought a new svs650. we both had our own llikes and such and we got different things. now being the off season in new york (SNOW) he is working on trying to re work the bike for next year being the gsxr 600 because it doesnt have any low end power it is all wide open power. it like to scream. like the other guy said it is reall a race bike. the motor on the 600 doesnt really come alive until 8000 rpm. which is about 50 miles an hour or more. my sv will pull so hard off the bottom it is deffinately a better choice for a street performance bike but if you want to race and like 13,000 rpm's all day long then get the gsxr.
