: Which .308 rifle?

I am looking to pick up a .308 rifle. I've been really interested in the m1a. Originally I was turned on by the size of the socom 2, 16" barrel, with all of the rails already on for what ever accessories you could want.
I am now reconsidering something in an AR design as I use an AR-15 A3 at work, and have that familiarity and muscle memory with the rifle.
So I really am interested in the pof 308. Anyone with any experience with this rifle? Any help or insight would be great. Here is a link to the rifle: http://www.pof-usa.com/p308/P-308-16-MRR-CF-308-CARBINE-C.R.O.S..htm

A co-worker has one of the Rock River Arms LAR-8 and loves it. I'd love to have one of the M1's and a H&K/CETME :punk

I bought the DPMS .308 AP4 a few years ago. Awesome rifle. You can custom make a rifle through a dealer or at their website. DPMSINC.COM. A basic .308 AR cost me $999. Sadly ammo has gone through the roof in .308.

663$? That is damn good value for money :oogle Leaves a nice budget for a good scope with equally good mounts :cool

What kind of budget are you looking at? Rifle's application?

That's nice. I'm looking for a 30-06 bolt action, but I'd prefer it in lefty. I don't think the Garand would mind sharing her supply of ammo with a scoped friend.

I got lucky and picked up a Remington model 700 30-06 at a gun show a while back for $500 from a collector who needed money! It's in great condition. It came with a Tasco scope, but since I got it for a lot less than I was expecting to pay I was thinking about getting this (http://www.leupold.com/tactical/products/scopes/mark-4-ert-riflescopes/mark-4-6-5-20x50mm-ert-m1-front-focal/) scope for it. I still haven't asked my dealer how much it will run me, but I'm pretty sure thats the one I'll be getting. It's overkill for my use, which is mainly target shooting, but then again so is a 30-06. So, why not?

Rifle is for targets, hunting, shtf, etc... Well I am saying that $2400 for the POF would be in my range. Having the m1a the way I would want it wouldn't take me to far off that price anyway. I want to keep the AR platform though. I also like the piston system.

Remington makes a .308 semi auto rifle called the R-25. Have you guys checked that out. It's $1500 I think. A downside is that it only comes in a hunting camo finish.
People are freaking out so much about a possible AWB that its hard to find anything in stock, and its also driving the prices up through the roof!

Unless you're dead set on the .308, take a look at the 300mag.

The AR-10 is a nice choice. Plenty of goodies also. Keep in mind, this is more of a "multi-purpose" rifle. If you want a true Does the $2400 include optics?

If you can find one, I recommend a PDC custom.:punk (beaucoup bucks though)

POF 308 does not include a scope. I was going to put a aimpoint ml3 for a bit, but the rifle can shoot beyond that range. The aimpoint would be nice for hunting and what not with its ability for fast target aquisition, of course that may be good out to 300 yards or so. I would have to get a decent scope for 1000 yard shooting. I guess Colt has an AR based piston carbine in the works, but I don't think its in 308. I've read mixed reviews about the armalite and dpms, but I'm guessing you will get that with everything as everyone has there own opinion. I will check out your links above though, thanks.

Remington makes what is being called the best .308 bolt action for the money, it's called the Remington Model 700 SS 5R Milspec. It'll cost you a grand for just the rifle and will shoot .5" MOA all day with 175gr Federal Sierra Matchking HPBT ammo. A lot of people will argue this FACT, but it has the same barrel as the U.S. Army's M24. Remington makes them for Uncle Sam. If you don't believe me, give Remington a call and try to get information on the 5R. They don't have any and can't transfer you to anyone that does.

I've got an Armalite AR10, calibered in 7.62x51mm (nearly the same as .308, without getting too technical). It's a great shooter, but it finnicky on the ammo it likes. If it isn't milspec ammo, it'll cause problems, but the correct ammo solves the problem. They are great all-around weapons.

Prices of both weapons and ammo are skyrocketing. They'll hold value better than bikes...that's for sure!

:cheers It is about individual taste and preference. I have never fired a POF so I didn't comment on it.

Not trying to flame or question your abilities with this next question. What would you be shooting at 1000yrds and have you hit that distance before?
Rock Creek Barrels are good but a cold shot at 1000yrds would be hard with the barrels on the POF.

Have fun and stay safe. Hope you find the rifle that works for you. :cheers

I have not shot 1000yrds. My co-worker has a 500yrd range at his house. There is a gun club nearby that has a range that was 1000yrds. but they have now made it out to 1450! I would eventually like to do that and this would allow me to. I use the 6920 at work, and that is why I am staying with an AR platform. I don't want to confuse my rifles when it counts and there are lives on the line. I have not shot the POF yet, and would love to first, but there isn't one that I've found around here. I've done a lot of research on it and everyone who has used it swares to its accuarcy.
By the way that is a nice collection above!

Placed my order for the POF 308 today. I'm excited and ready for the waiting game to begin! Hopefully the price of ammo will drop by then! Ok wishful thinking :P
I will post pics upon arrival with a range report to follow

A-hatGSXRTrixter,

Very true, the 5R is a VERY fine rifle and a steal of deal. They are available from the nice folks at Sniper Country PX : http://snipercountrypx.com/

Another great buy is just the 700PSS (Police). Little less money, little (tiny)less accurate but avail in more calibers. (5.56, 7.62, 300WM, 300 Lapua)

Nice colection there too, A-hatGSXRTrixter! :cheers
