Hey guys, I'm looking at what seems like a pretty good deal on a 2001 SV650S, only problem is that it is down in Florida and is at least 16 hours away... The guy wants $3200 for a 2001 SV650S with 8300 miles on it, and if everything works well I'd prolly take a roadtrip down there with a friend or 2 to go pick it up. He has pictures on his website which I mirrored on my server here: Pics of the ride (http://www.jgcomps.com/sv650s/sv650s.htm)

Any recommendations? And anything you guys can tell from the pics? He said he hasn't rode it for a few months, and it has been dropped in the parking lot before. What's up with the knicks on the forks, is that normal? Thanks for any help you guys can give me on this, and any recommendations. Guy says he has a friend with a motorcycle shop where he will keep the bike, and I said I'd pay to have them inspect it and fax me a report and then PayPal him a deposit if everything comes out good...

Seems a long way to go. Do you save that much when you count money for gas and such? I'd see if I could find one closer.

As for condition: the forks always get to look like that on SVs (at least the older ones), shouldn't be a problem. The brake disks are somewhat rusty - normally not a problem because surface rust wears off fast when you brake, but it could be a sign that the bike has been kept outside for prolonged periods of time. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif

Just had a second look. The rear brake caliper and many of the engine bolts are rusty. That bike has not been very well maintained. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif Also, the tires have the widest chicken strips I've seen in a long time = new rider. That means two things: 1. The bike has not been ridden very hard http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif 2. He probably has no idea of maintenance http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif

I'd look elsewhere...

And third look - you said it has been dropped. It's on the left side - rashed bar end, bend clutch lever http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif

$3200 is a good price, but the bike does show signs of neglect. The chain has rust, big NO NO! If you do go down to buy it, ask for a test ride. If it's not possible start it up and once it's warmed up, rev the shit out of it. Bikes that sit to long tend to have gas gum up in the carbs,
I'd offer him $2800, because that lack of care for the bike.
My 2 cents

Don't waste your time. Everyone is right - I bought a neglected bike and it ended up costing lots of money and many hours broken down by the side of the road.

You want a good deal on an SV-S? There is a blue '02 SV650S BRAND NEW!!! sitting in the dealer I bought my new SV1000S from. I'm sure you could probably get it cheap as they've got a floor full of '03 SVs as well.

Ask for Ryan - he's the General Manager. Tell him Justin who just bought the SV1000S sent you.
