: Is it possible to pull a muscle...........
Wifey 11-02-2003, 03:26 AM Is it possible to pull a muscle in your "pecks" so bad that you cant lift your arm http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif or is it something more serious?????? I have been working my chest and today when I went to lift my son out of the car something happened and the pain is almost unbearable http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif
Could it just be a torn muscle?
JonRags 11-02-2003, 03:56 AM Yes it is possible. Never heard of it happening to a woman, but that doesn't mean it can't.
Let me guess, you told Michael where it hurt and he offered to kiss it and make it better?

Nope he stomped off muttering "Great now she has another excuse!"

Im telling you it feels like my boob is being ripped off when I move my arm or touch it http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Do you think a muscle relaxer would help it http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
JonRags 11-02-2003, 04:02 AM I don't know if a relaxer would help it, but it probably couldn't hurt.
I'd try something mixed with beer. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

GdSaXnR 11-02-2003, 04:08 AM Motrin would be good to take since it is anti-inflammatory. I think you are supposed to take it as close as possible to when the injury occured.

bikergrl 11-02-2003, 04:11 AM I would soak in a good hot tub for a while and take the pain killers, I really do hate to say this but by massaging the area it will help it out.
And drink lots of water, water will help the toxins leave your system and help heal your mucle faster.

Yes, I always stretch as a matter of fact I stretch every morning and before I go to bed as well as before I work out. Most dancers and Gymnasts do this.
oldgixxer 11-02-2003, 05:55 AM Did it turn black and blue immediately after you felt that pain? That would be a tell tale sign that you ripped it.Did you hear an audible "tear"? If not thats a good thing too. I'm sure you just stretched it a little to far in a certain way and thats the pain. You'll have it for a few days at least.Just take some naproxen and rest it,the hot tub/Jacuzzi will do woders.Hope ya get better.....
lilmush 11-02-2003, 06:14 AM Take Pain killers and ice the area. ice, heat ice, heat. Heating pad not chemical heat. Some people are not believers in heat though.
CatchMe 11-02-2003, 07:17 AM Wifey, usually if a muscle is torn, it will swell badly and turn black and blue. In a young female, you would REALLY have to overload the muscle to actually tear it. I know occasionally after my chest workouts, I will get a muscle spasm, and they hurt unbearably. Maybe thats what you have is a muscle spasm. A muscle realxer would def. help this.
Sometimes, I have other muscles that spasm...LOL

Yes, you can tear any muscle in the body, well hmmmm, just about. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
Anyways, like someone said are you stretching before your workouts? ALso, never stretch a cold muscle. You wave to warm up very light first. Put this into scale on your workout. Ok, for a chest day, I'll warm up with 135lbs. I'll do that 20X. Then do it again for 10. Resting about 30sec between them. Then I go to 225lbs and do that for 12X, then I go up to 275 do that for 10X,. then go to 325lbs and do that 8X, then go up to appx 375 and do that for like 4-5X, then hit 425 for 1X.
Then, I go on to do other exercises to complete my chest day. Inbetween each set I am stretching. I stretch after the 135lb warmup and get them flowing. When you stretch you expand the fibers allowing more blood to flow and inturn allows more glycogen release to the muscles. Muscles are 80% water. In water are the elements hydrogen and oxygen. The exercise I described here is the anaeobic version.
I do this for every body part and every type of workout I'm doing. I saw one guy on the college football team "maxxing" out and he was hitting up I believe it was 550lbs on the flat bench and all of a sudden his pectoral muscle completely ripped from his bone. He was in major pain let me tell you. It scared me at first cause you could actully here is rip loudly under the skin...and was just hanging in the wrong spot....His whole body in that vecinity was black and blue....He had surgury and 9 months later came back into the rehab sport hospital and was benching 6lbs......It got to him so bad. You could tell how depressed he was. Going from 550lbs down to 6lbs....
Anyways, you may have a mild tear in the muscle. If you have hit the weight many times before and never had a prob then you may have not have warmed up enough. Think of your muscle as a rubberband. If you take a rubberband and just pull it it will snap. Its cold and brittle. If you stretch it over and over then you can maximize the power the rubberband can hold. The same goes for a balloon, that is, if you care about maximizing the circumference of the balloon.
Also, when you stretch NEVER bounce. Just go in smooth holds. And hold it there for a little bit, say, 10sec. Longer for larger muscles. And holding it for a few longer won't hurt either. They heavier you lift, the longer you should rest too. For heavy poundage for you, then rest up to 2-3 minutes.
ABout your muscle. It could be a few things. You could have torn a muscle (just slightly, if it was complete you wound't be here and you wouldn't have been able to pick up your lil' boy), you could have torn a tendon. I screwed the one under the arm pit and could only lift about 185lbs at my best. Atfer a bit of slowly working it back up and plenty of rest she returned back to normal. Depending on the injury, ligaments and tendons once ripped may need surgury to be set back in place and/or can take a year or more to heal. It may be somehting minor and will go away with a few meds. I am on Naproxen right now for a torn ligament in my foot (around the ankle and one in my arch) for wrestling this 395lbs guy and he dropped his dead ass weight on me with my foot trying to get leverage so I could put him in an arm bar and choke him out but snapped it to far. It has been like 2-3wks and still hurts but can still ride and walk around. It sjust now I don't always have to limp......
Go to your doctor and have him/her look at it. They will tell you right away what has gone wrong. Also, if you can go to a sports doctor it would be better as it is a sports related injury and they see these injuries alll the time. If not a MD will do just fine.It is hard to diagnose with out seeing and feeling around to see where it hurts most and narrowing the possibilities down......
Hope you feel better. I am feeling your pain now, but in my foot. But have had chest injuries too and know that sh!t hurts.....

alumahorse 11-02-2003, 12:57 PM It's not only possible but probable that PITBULL man is right. You really don't want to just introduce any amount of weight without first warming up to it. It really does sound like you need to warm up better. Not only stretching but an actual warm up. Say 1/2 the weight, 1/2 a set would do good as long as your not going extreemly heavy. Thats how i do it. As long as your not going for a competition or something it should take care of your problem in the future. As for it being sore now, just nurse it (pun fully intended) and get it into either a hottub or a hot bath. (your gonna look pretty silly hunched over the bathtub with your boob hanging into the water) I suppose a hotwater bottle would do.
Torn7th 11-02-2003, 02:36 PM Very possible i tore my right PEC in half on a Max lift several years ago.Muscle are like anything else they have there limits luckily i didnt need surgery but i was blue and black for several weeks after the fact.I train diff, rarely push my max i do more reps and less weight now and with a diet it works out great. Now i just gotta give up some of my BS hobbies and ill be fine lol......... http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cry.gif
