Just curious how many miles some of you have ridden before needing an engine rebuild or other major engine work. Mostly interested in info on well maintained bikes with lots of highway clicks.

Thanks

I would like to know too. I just bought my bike thinking im going to ride back and forth from work everyday. around 50-60 round trip. I end up putting about 1000 miles a month. From what im seeing things start brakeing around 10,000 Staters and other probems. I have 6,000 now. I guess thats why its a sports bike not a cruiser. Let me know what you guys think. Anyone got high miles on your gsxr?

my K1600 has 11k showing, replacing the chain/ sprockets, brake lines/ pads next week - everything else is fine, runs sweet with no noises http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I bought my bike new, have had now for 19 months and put on just over 20,000 miles with no mechanical problems...just replaced parts that wear out: brake pads, sprockets, chain...etc. No problems with the clutch either

as long as you dont beat the hell out of it stunting you can get tens of thousands of miles on a larger displacment sport bike (600 plus) i know at 15000 miles (give or take a few) its a good idea to get the valves adjusted, but as long as you take care of the consumables (ie oil, filters, brake pads, chains, sprokets, seals etc.) you will ride for a long time.

here is a better idea yet, try checking your manufacturers' owners manual, it tells maintence intervals http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/idea.gif keep up on those and youll be sailing free and clear. motorcyclist reported a while back on a guy in germany who had over 100,000 miles on his R1 by just keeping up on the maintence; hope this helps you out http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif

I have 10,550 mile on my 02 Gixxer 1K, Changed the plugs twice, change the oil & filter every 1,500-1,800 miles, oil looks almost like new when I dump it. Bike is as strong as the day I bought it.

I have a shade over 30,000 miles on my Ducati M900 . The only thing I have done to the engine was a piston and ring replacement. The bike didnt even need this but I had to do it because I bent the ring when I was inspecting the cylinder heads and new stock rings were just a few bucks cheaper than aftermarket pistons and rings that gave me a boost in compression and less weight! I would throw a guess that an inline four like the suzuki should give atleast the same type of service life as long as you dont live in the redline on old oil and low grade fuel.

with proper maintenance these motors will last til 40,000 miles no problem (if not longer). as long as your not actually racing the thing that is. i cant tell you how many gixxers ive seen with over 40,000 miles and still going strong with no major problems. my brothers 98 750 has over 30,000 miles with its fair share of stunting, and trackdays on it and (knock on wood) the bike is rock solid. spooner is another guy who has a bike with well over 30,000 miles of track days and etc. with no major problems (that i can remember).

My last two VFR's had 36000 (1994) and 46000(1986) on them with only one problem on te 1996 being a bad fuel pump. Change the oil every 2000 and they will last FOREVER!!!!!!

Actually Spooner now has over 50,000 miles on his 98 600. I did a track day with him this last Sunday and he rolled off the track at the end of the day with 50,002 miles. He has done mutiple track days on his bike and does the normal maintenance on it and it still runs damn strong I think. I have 20,000 miles on my 00 750 with no problems (minus the 2nd gear I had to fix but that is common on the 00 750's). Bike is as strong as it's ever been.

i have around 26000mls on my 00 750. I change the oil every 2000 miles. I've done probably 7 track days on it etc. the engine runs really strong but it'll be heading for another gearbox rebuild in the next 10,000. I already did second gear at 10,000. The bike gets ridden everyday in all weather. i change the coolant every year before summer & use a new filter(suzuki brand) with every oil change. also have the throttle bodies synchronised from time to time.

I had a 01 gsxr 750 that I put over 32K on, mostly highway, and backroad riding. I ran it hard and I only had to replace the clutch every 12K or so. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/punk.gif

A well maintained Kawi 1000, 68,000 miles before major engine work, those were not easy miles either. 35,000 on my 97 gix 750 no major work , even the valve clearance was good.
Over 26,000 km on my 2002 never touched. All of my bike are well maintained, I don't ride as hard as some guys I'm sure.

ZT is spot on-I have a shade over 50k and it runs VERY well-just as good as when I bought it with 10k. At the last trackday on it I was running over 30 minutes at my full pace and would only take about 15 minutes to rest and hydrate and right back out-not one hicup or problem. I am selling the bike now so I haven't really ridden it much since, but I don't see why it would last at least another 20k or so with it being ridden in the same fashion, and even more with lighter usage. Also-still on the ORIGINAL clutch http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif Also I have never had to adjust the valves, they are always in spec when I check them http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

My new bike has only 1,800 miles though-I have a LONG ways until she breaks (hopefully) but its mostly going to be a track bike so I won't get near as much use out of it.

Run it until it doesn't run anymore. Then it is time for a rebuild!

A badly running motorcycle engine has little place running at all.

My 01 600 is just shy of 30k brought into the shop ran a compression check, looked at the bottom end.. and was told i might need rings in 5k. so... maybe next year i do a rebuild...
