The light came on this morning while i was riding to work. when i got to a gas station i had a paper clip ready and a spare key. I stoped put it in netreul. Left the key on and hit the kill switch (thinking the engine should be off but the key on) I then used a spare key to open the back and i had a peper clip and the connector right there. So i jumped it and looked at the display. And all i seen was check and the oil can was showing. I then relized thats the same thing i would normally see with the key on engine off. I didnt see any codes come up. Where did i go wrong? Thanks.

After you did all that you should have turned the kill switch back off.

I dont understand. Turn the kill switch off? I did turn it off. thats what killed the engine. If i go out to the bike now with the key on and the switch off or on it says check. thanks jim

To add to that... even when you inadvertently cleared whatever error code you may have had by hitting the kill switch, you should still get the C00 display when in dealer mode, preceded by the dashed line indicating the position of the TPS. If you didn't get this - you didn't bridge the connection properly (note that it does take a sec after bridging for the display to change).
Also... that is a multi-purpose light. It could also be indicating oil or temp problems. It's only an FI related problem if the display shows the text 'FI', either alternating with the temp, or constant. If it's not FI related, there won't be an error code.

OK so still no one has anwserd my question. Does the engine need to be running? Im thinking what you guys are saying is come to a stop. Leave the key on but hit the kill switch. engine dies now tunr the kill switch on again. Now the key is still on the kill switch is on but the engine is off? Then jump wait a few sec. i should see the code if i have one.
When the red light comes on the FI switch between FI and the temp which was around 170 on the freeway. The lil oil can image was not on. and i have check the level atleast and thats ok. (i know that dont mean i have perfect oil pressure or not) . What you guys think? Thank JIM

look in the left side of the tail section.....there's a white connector with a black rubber cap on it.....two wires coming out of it, but the connector's not connected to anything. it might be buried pretty far in there....i had to remove my tail section to see it.
pull off the cap, bridge the two contacts inside together with a piece of wire, and after like 2 seconds, you'll see the error code on the dash....'cxx' where xx is the error code.
make sure the ignition's on and the fi error light is lit while you're doing this...if you turn off the ignition, it'll reset.
