: Chain wax and keeping your rims clean
Doubler8 09-29-2003, 06:19 PM I have some good Bel-Ray chain wax, but it still gets my white wheels very dirty.
I have tried doing it at the end of the night, so it sits for about 8 hours before I ride again.
Any tips or is it just something I will have to deal with?
you da man 09-30-2003, 12:20 AM Regardless if you lube or wax your chain you are going to get "fling" somewhere. Do a track day and see how much fling you get http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I use Maxima Crystal Clear and still looks like shit after a track day on my polished wheels. Anyone got any suggestions for the best lube or wax that has minimal fling at higher speeds http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/dunno.gif
Jon no h 09-30-2003, 01:39 AM If you are riding your bike correctly, you will get fling. The thing to do is take the next step - instead of looking at the cause, look for the cure. I find that WD-40 does a great job at degreasing my white wheels very quickly and with minimal work.
NastyC4 09-30-2003, 05:11 AM After i got my first service at suzuki done... i noticed they COAted my chain with grease.... i ended up wiping it all off on the outsides, and anywhere i could reach. Spin is minimal now. I figure the chain might not last as long but i couldnt care less. as long as my wheels are clean. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
DEN_M 09-30-2003, 07:59 AM Just something you gotta deal with. Clean up wome of the excess after applying chain wax--it'll help minimize the excess flinging.
damn you AJ, that Maxima Crystal Clear is shiiioot, I'm sure it looks good on your bling-bling chain and sprocket, but my rim gets filthy http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
GIXXERUK 09-30-2003, 11:13 AM castrol chain wax i found to be the best but you will always get fling http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif
MrJones944 09-30-2003, 12:02 PM Most of the time ill wipe down the wheels with a rag that I srpray with silocone spray. Last time I tried some suzuki bike polish/wax shit and it did a pretty good job. All I had to do after the first ride was take a dry rag and wipe off the fling. I use the belray stuff too http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
DjUltimate 10-01-2003, 11:46 AM I use Maxima chain wax and Bug & Tar remover to clean my wheels.
Works like a dream. WD-40 works good too.
FYI:
Don't ever spray slippery substances (ie. WD-40, bug & tar remover, etc.) directly onto your wheels. Spray it on a rag, then wipe the wheels being careful not to get any on the tires.
K6 GIXXER 10-02-2003, 10:37 PM I also use the Bel-Ray, it seems to be the best that I have tried anyway.
Best thing i have found to get the crap off is cheap old water dispersant. Its only about $2 AUS and you buy it from any of the $2 shops etc. Give it a try you will be impressed, only down side is its stinks a bit so dont get the shit all over your hands otherwise you have to wash them 20 times to get rid of the smell.
mmmbarley 10-03-2003, 05:53 AM The suzuki bike cleaner cleans up chain wax like a dream.
GSXRSE7EN 10-03-2003, 09:42 AM I use the Bel Ray also and apply it after my ride so the chain is still warm. After rotating the wheel afew times to try and work the lube into the chain I let it set up for about ten minutes. After a beer, I then go and try to wipe off as much of the excess lube as possible on the outsides of the chain. This has minimized my fling a lot.
What little I do get on the rear cowl and wheel, I use Dawn to clean it up. Easy on the hands and breaks down grease really well. Makes the white wheels shine. A little wax on the wheels helps cleanup too.
Dallas Gixxer 10-03-2003, 03:30 PM I've found that the best stuff to use to get your rims clean is the commercial strength greased lightening... I get the big jug at home depot... pour some in a spray bottle... spray... and wipe clean.... They sparkle.
Not sure how safe it is on polished or chrome rims are.
Novtec1 10-04-2003, 10:18 PM believe it or not guys if you put a few coats if wax on your rims brakedust, and whatever comes right off. i pretty much just wipe mines off with water and a rag. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/wtf.gif
MY02gsxr1000 10-05-2003, 03:25 PM I use Maxima chain wax, I get the chain good and warm at the end of the day, put the bike on the stand and spray on a good amount and wipe it off as I go. This cleans the chain and elminates all sling off. I do this every 500miles. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
Valhalla 10-05-2003, 07:13 PM go to the dollar store and get something called AWESOME it comes in a clear squirt bottle and only costs $1 for a pretty good sized bottle. my wife got it for something she was doing... i tried it on my white wheels and it worked really well. all i had to do was wipe off the brake dust and chain wax after spraying that stuff on. no elbow grease required what so ever.
I use Maxima chainwax and applies it when the chain is warm after a ride... then just let it be an hour or so... then you won't have som much to clean
When I clean my rim I use paraffin oil (translation?) for lamps, the dirt goes away very easily... I also uses paraffin oil when I clean my chain, it doesn't damage the chain it is very cheap. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/thumb.gif
JJ Bad 10-09-2003, 03:47 PM I just posted this on the Gixxer 1000 site but thought I would pass this along here also. I just discovered this product called Plexus. It's a wax/cleaner. If you use it on your rims it will at least make it easier to clean your rims. Works great on the entire bike.

gimpsta 10-09-2003, 11:05 PM Here's an idea!! Get Black rims. This is what I did. I swaped out black rims for my telefonica white ones. I had to get rid of the front thought it was bent. And when i got a black front I had to buy a black rear. So nice clean rims both with dunlop 207's with only about 500miles on them, cost me $500 to my door. So now i don't need to buy tires next go around and I can sell my rear rim with the polished lips on ebay. And if any racer or weirdo wants a partially bent front rim I'll be getting rid of it soon to. Anyhow black is better cause you don't see the mess as much.
tlynch750 10-11-2003, 03:41 AM Just get some stands and that makes it a lot easier to clean the rims

Don't let that stuff sit on your swingarm too long. It'll discolor the metal. I can't seem to get that stain off now:( cleans your chain & sprockets real good, but kerosene works just as well and won't mar the swingarm finish
Quick Toy 10-12-2003, 06:40 PM if u dont want fling, then u have to get a a chain lube thats real tacky..Motul's is pretty good...but the side effect, is dirt sticks to it pretty well too...Belray is great and i highly recommend it, but it will fling.
Im running the kawasaki race lube..it flings everywhere, but...it seems to keep the orings well lubed
Starter98 10-27-2003, 04:34 AM Quick toy is right, the tackyer the lube the more the dirt sticks to it. I've been turned to Castrol Chain Oil. Lubes extremely well, costs 1/4 the price of the other shit and if you only use a little doesn't fling that much. Easy to get off as well.
