Has anyone removed the cat converter on an 08 and just replaced it with a straight pipe connected to a slip on? Would that be bad or not?

You would need to cut it and weld on a stright pipe as the cat is part of the header.

Major bummer.

I'm still trying to determine if we can just replace the whole header/exhaust with an '06/'07 one. If so, that's the way I'm going because I can't afford a full system yet, and I totally like the stock 06/07 exhaust better than the huge '08 one.

Well thats what i was planning on doing, just taking it to a muffler shop and having the pipe cut after the headers come together, then have them weld a straight pipe to the Yoshi slip on i have, but im trying to find out if thats gonna be bad for the bike, btw im getting a power commander if i do this as well

no it wont be bad if you have a straight pice of pipe welded in.. it would be just like getting a full exhaust..

06/07 header will fit. Get it on eBay before prices goes up. i got mine already...

Yeah, but will the shorty pipe/cat from '07/'08 fit though?

I don't get it. The 07 and 08 is completely different. There is no slip-on what fit on the 07 and 08.

Oops, so sorry, typo.. I meant "will the entire shorty pipe/cat/headers from an '06/'07 fit on the '08?"

As i said, if you put an 06/07 header on it yes. Obviously won't fit on the 08 header since it's welded together....

i spoke to my friend before, about to change the full system exhaust, he is curious about the cat have any wire connected to engine cpu. if yes, when you remove the connection, does the engine cpu will appear error signal on the panel? then what can i do?

So, since the cat is welded onto the exhaust manifold, would there be any problems with just cutting the cat off completely? My friend is a union pipefitter, so we would be able to just cut the cat off of the manifold using a portaband, and then just create a pipe to attach the manifold to the slipon. According to the pics off of motorcycle-usa.com, it looks like the O2 sensor connects in front of the cat, so the bike shouldn't throw any error codes if the cat is removed.

Now, would the lack of a cat cause backpressure issues with the bike?

Back pressure issues from no cat??Don't think so why do you think people run full systems ,to open the exhaust up!!:shifty

I figured it wouldn't cause a problem. I've seen loss of torque on car motors where the owner put on some 4" fart can exhaust, and wasn't sure if opening up the exhaust on a bike would cause any issues. I figured my idea would probably be similar to a full exhaust.

from what i have read about from the Suzuki engineers they engineered the exhaust a certain way to gain more mid-range power

the weld @the cat is about 1/4" from set valve, very tight space.priced a new one out and a k8 header/cat combo is 2000.00 (CAD) and a new k7 header is 1000.00(CAD) i'd be carefull cutting anything.

Before you cut anything I would buy the slip on you want so your buddy can measure everything out.

Yes with enough skill you can cut and weld just about anything.

I still don't see any reason why we can't use the '06/'07 Full systems on the '08s. I think the mounting points are the same... just waiting for someone to confirm this.

I have a Two Brothers exhaust for my 2008 GSXR 600. I just completed the project today based off of the instructions provided at http://www.gixxer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=193288. Since mine was a Two Brothers can, I had to get creative and sacrifice on the looks a little..but it works like a charm!
1) I used at DeWalt reciprocating saw with a blade specialized to cut metal ($3 a blade at Home Depot). It took about 5 min to cut through and the cut was quite clean.
2) I took a grinder to smooth out any rough edges.
3) Went to O'reilly auto parts and bought a 2 inch flex pipe. (2 inch flex pipe will fit over the header and will bump right up against the SET valve but will not impeed its motion)
4) Spray painted the flex pipe black with Rust Oleum high heat black paint.
6) Fit the flex pipe over the existing pipe from the Two Brothers canister. (had to kinda twist and snake it to fit it on top. NOTE: The flex pipe does not go all the way to the cannister so you will get a half flex pipe and half smooth pipe look. This is the part where I sacrificed on the look. One might think it looks a little redneck...but hey it works and i did it without dropping any major dough :)
6) Mounted the flex pipe onto the header and secured it with a C-clamp.
7) Mounted the Two Brothers canister back onto the right passenger foot peg.

DONE! Cat removed, sounds waaaay deeper, throatier, and meaner. and about 30lbs lighter! Give me email if you wanna see pics.
