Ok I am from Detroit and was wondering if anybody knew the story on speed limits in Montana. I have been told in the past that there are sections where there are NO speed limits. Can somebody shed some light on this for me so I can plan a road trip.

There wasnt a speed limit on the interstate a few years back....but it was changed to 75. You couldnt go out and haul ass, but i passed a few hp's about 90 to 95 mph without any problems a few times. I wish it was still like that.

when I lived in montana the speeding tickets during the day were only $5.00 - unless you were going extremely fast or in town. After they brought back the speed limits they also raised the price of the tickets. bastards.

Yeah that law change pissed me off. When the limit was 55 anything under 90 was a 5 dollar ticket and it didn't go on your record. I used to carry a spare 5 above the visor in my truck for that reason. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I live over in Kalispell and the highest speed limit around here is 70 and on most highways 65. I got pulled over on my bike back when there wasn't a speed limit. I was clocked at 138. I went to court over it and won. That is why they changed it back. They said it was unconstitutional. I'm sure it had more to do with the state losing revenue from lack of tickets more than anything though. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/flipa.gif

the speed limit used to be "reasonable and prudent" which in lamen terms means that if it is clear and dry you con go as fast as you want. obviosely if it is raining and your doing 100 mph the Highway Patrol's gonna get ya. i guess to many people were taking advantage of the law and a lot of people were grtting in accidents so they changed it to 75 on the highways and regular posted speed limits in town.

so no its not a myth, at one time there was not a speed limit on the highways in montana.

i hope that helped to clear things up!

One of the main reason they changed it was because the federal goverment was going to pull their federal highway funding, so in order to keep getting the checks montana bent over and took it from uncle sam.

i read up on this, apparently the R&P law was enforced differently throughout the state. in the flat straight sections of the state judges wouldn't convict under 100mph.

then it was more a question of WHAT you were driving WHERE and WHEN and WHAT CONDITIONS. so a minivan in the rain, full of kids would have been nailed to the wall for 95+ while a ferrari going 120 in clear weather daytime wouldn't have had a problem, so long as he didn't pass anyone with too big a speed differential. at night the speed limit was 65for everyone because of animal strikes.

i suppose then that people got pissy because the law was interpreted and enforced so differently for everyone, the rich guys got off scot free while the poor guy in a 1978 nova got burned for much less...plus the concerns about fed funding and gas consumption, as well as insurance rates, probably all had somehting to do with the return to a speed limit.

i'd still speed there, i bet they'd be more lenient than your average trooper here in the northeast.
