: UK Tinted Visor law

Othello

The UK has passed a law that makes black, colored, or tinted visors illegal.

You don't need me to tell you how stupid this law is. The only good reason I can think of for the government is that faces cannot be photographed with all the front facing speed cameras all over the place if the rider has a dark visor on.

Please sign this petition and send to as many riders as possible.

Can we make this a sticky?

Here in cali any window tint in front of the driver is illegal. I had a Dr's excuse that stated I had Photophobia. That is a sondition where your eyes don't dialate right and bright light gives you headaches.

It got me off about half the time.

Those laws blow goats. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/plthumbsdown.gif

It kinda makes you wonder then why wearing sunglasses in a car isn't illegal.

The foarard facing speed cameras idea is a non starter as bikes dont have front numberplates anyway othello.

I dont use tinted visors but ill sign the petition anyway. Not that it will do fuck all good.

It doesn't help when you have situations where the government sends a team of researchers to a regular bike spot at sunset and counts the number of riders using tinted visors and then finds out how many of those were carrying a clear visor to use once the sun had gone down.

Apparently 40% were planning to ride home in the dark with their tinted visors http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/bitchslap.gif

Of course, the Government doesn't realise that legislating for the idiots in our society isn't the way to go...

The forward facing number plate isn't too far off mate... If they don't do the plate they'll probably put a transponder on the bike. Either way, we're heading for front facing recognition and the reaosn, I believe, that they have banned tinted visors is because they want to take a snap of our ugly mugs and could give a toss about safety.

Othello, here in melbourne, Aust, we were very close to front plates (still may get them), a transponder device etc, but they still cant work out a system for front plates due to the wide variety of bike types, ie sticker plate for fairing bikes where it would go on the screen (for that i would ride with no fairing on the street which is still legal, just to spite our government).. so far this has not come through.. we got stung a extra $50 rego fee for safety issues, from mainly riders been in serious accidents, caused by a cars fault. our speed cameras are just as bad as Englands now, ussually on high traffic density roads that are rather safe and never had accidents (there reason for them in the 1st place).. i really hope this government does not get voted in for a 3rd term.. also our road compliance has a %10 + or - for speedo errors so speed cameras where set to that, now at any speed limit there is only a 3km tolerance in anything from a 40km zone to a 110km zone.. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

as each year goes by it gets harder and harder

That really sucks, I don't wear sunglasses and that sheild is the only protection that I have against the sun. When I get a lid that's the one thing I get right along with it. I would hate if they did that here.

The law has been around for a very long time, and many people have tried to change it.

I understand that you are allowed a 'mild tint' and there are other specific that you can have like a photochromatic one that lightens at night.

I think i got 20+ ticktes for dark visors in the UK in a ten year period, each time it was the same routine.

Its like 'race cans' and small number plates, cool as hell, but not worth the hassle, if they see you have a dark visor, or hear your can, or (fail to) see your small plate, they pull you, and it gives them an opportunity to give you a ticket for all the other things that you have that are wrong.....

If I ride in the UK, I stick to my Oakleys, and do not give anyone a reason to pull me over any more.

Thanks.. over 1000 signatures were added in one day. It is possible to keep this going. Just email the link to every biker you know and encourage them to send it to every biker they now. Also, what really helped, was people posting the link on other boards that they're members of. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

Othello - does it matter if those signing the petition are American, or from other countries besides the UK?

I was going to sign it, but I live in Southern California, USA.... I don't really see how my $.02 is going to help you in Jolly England... If I'm wrong, lemme know - and I'll gladly sign your peitition, as well as pass it along to my other buddies at other bike boards I frequent.

- No loud exhaust pipes
- You must have mirrors/blinkers on your bike
- No wheelies allowed on public roads

Etc, etc....

Not sure as we'll get anywhere with this as there is so few signatures.

There is an article in this months BIKE magazine about those leg protectors that they tried to bring out in the late 80's and the petition that got those stopped. It took 188,000 signatures http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

What are the actual reasons for making a dark visor illegal? Why are visor inserts legal then?

GIXXERUK
04-24-2004, 02:44 AM
its easier to remove an insert than a dark visor cos you need to carry a clear one
you know we cant be trusted not to ride at night with it :-(

I find it quite funny, I ride with a tinted visor in the summer. I'll carry my clear if I'm gonna be out after dark. I'd never dream of riding in the dark with a tinted visor and I dont know anyone that would be stupid enough to either.

It's fine to wear sunglasses, Which isnt as easily removed if the bike is in motion e.g.if your riding along and ride into a dark un-lit tunnel you can just flip up the visor.

I signed it ages ago, I doubt it'll make any differance

gregsblade

I always wear a dark visor during the day and carry a clear one under my seat, and will continue to do so whether its legal or not!! I consider my safety is worth more than a £30 fine!! 75% of coppers never say anything anyway!! Besides how many MP's that pass these stupid ass laws actually ride bikes? they're okay in the back of the chauffer driven Jaguars. W**NKERS !!

Yes. Many of us are. In ten years of wearing one I've not been stopped by the Police yet. Must have been lucky.

They re-examined the law recently but decided not to change it. Sadly there is no way a petition will change anything even if every biker in the UK signed it.

i thought it was to do with health and safety for them being illegal. you can wear sunglasses as they have UV filters blocking out harmful rays whereas visors have no UV protection at all so when shaded the pupils are dilated more exposing them more to those harmful rays. sunscreen for your eyes basically. how stupid is it?

Its all for our health & safety !

Bollox.

The cheapest pair of sunglasses you can buy are legal. No impact protection. No UV filter, no nothing, but thats ok.

British law tries to imply it fits in with Euro standards. But how come tinted visors are ok off shore.?? Isle Of Man, Ireland and mainland europe are all legal to buy and use tinted visors.

This is a stupid and dangerous law. and its all related to the obsession with cameras as a way of upholding the traffric laws.

As I've put in my note. I wear glasses and there's no law to say that I can't go out in perscription sunglasses and ride in the dark with them on. At least with a dark visor I can lift it up and ride slowly home but I can at least see where I'm going!!!! It's a stupid law that should be scrapped. Your driving along and you have your sunglasses on, you get to a long tunnle and at first you can see nothing til your eyes adjust but at least with a dark visor you can lift it up!!!!!

I totally agree it doesn't help but these people might have been willing to lift the visor up and to be honest who out there would ride a bike not knowing where the road went to!

Got to ask whats the law on pillions wearing dark visors or is that a stupid question????
