Just did it a few days ago:

1. Remove speedo sensor allen bolt (4mm allen?)
2. Remove 4 cover bolts (8mm socket)
3. Remove speedo drive bolt - 6mm allen. Its regular thread, lefty loosey (I used an air gun)
4. Remove counter shaft sprocket nut - 32mm socket (will for sure need an air gun)

For an 01-02 GSXR-1000

83 or 86 lb/ft--Can't remember--Somebody go look it up on the Service Manual (which I did for my bike) and post it. Shit--I'll take a look--It's 83.2 lb/ft for the sprocket nut and 14.4 lb/ft for the sensor rotor bolt---Thanks go to Jeffw's cd

I'm going to be changing my front sprocket tomorrow if they get the part to me in time. Why is an air gun needed for the 32mm socket? Is it just really tight or something? The steering head on my R6 was insanely tight but I got it off with a breaker bar and a 2M extension of tubing I had around here. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Hmm, hope I can change the sprocket with the tools I have here, I want to take it to the track on Sat with the lower gearing.

Air makes it a lot easier. If you get a fat friend to sit on the bike with his foot on the rear brake it comes off ok. You can also put the front wheel against a wall. Either way it's nice to have a helper. There is some debate about using Loctite when you replace it. I have air so I use red. I've had them get loose without it. Good luck.

no big drama, did it last night with the bike all loaded up in the van so it wasn't going anywhere. locktited it into place, took it to the track today, much more punchy in 2nd gear up, but makes me a bit paranoid about the throttle coming out of the turns now, hmm. will keep playing with it. http://www.gixxer.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Glad it worked out. If you put maximum extension on your rear suspension (extend shock if adjustable or shim upper mount) you will get better drive traction on exits. RAISING the front will put some trail back into your geometry. I got this tip from Traxxion Dynamics via the late, great Jörund. Best part is you get a lot more ground clearance when you're done.
