Sorry that I posted here.. but this section seems to be the most active one. I need help ASAP. Ok, I've never done this before. I am planning on buying a bike from another state. Where/how do I check the history of the bike? I've tried online VIN checks but the info they gave me are very limited. (year/make.. that's it) I want the full vehicle report. Also, where do I take the title certificate to? What do I need from the seller. Please help ASAP. Do I pay tax on the spot? Please help!!

Thanks in advance!

All you have to make sure of is that the Vin on the title matches the vin on the bike and that it has not been tampered with on the bike. If the vin looks original, and after a test ride on the bike you are happy with it, who cares about the history? An online database isnt going to tell you if the bike has been wheelied too many times. Take the title along with a reciept from the seller to your local department of motor vehicles, and register it. Depending on what the reciept says, will determine how much sales tax you pay at the DMV. This is where the seller can save you some money. If he writes you 2 reciepts, one for how much you actually paid for it and one for about half the price, take the one for half the price into the DMV and you just saved yourself a couple of hundred bucks. Then you DMV will issue you a new title for the bike in you own state. Easy as pie.

Well what if the bike is a stolen bike? How do I check? What if I want to see if the bike has ever been involved in accidents? Thanks for the info though!!
